hmm
this nr came from right below a plastic cover,on the engine block which was located at drivers side of the car.
Couldnt find any other nr in the dark.
i checked the lhs, but there was just the battery and some other plastic parts...
it is a vw/audi engine though.
thats what it says next to the nr i mentioned.

ill check again tomorrow, when ill drive it down the road to the mechanic
for the blue slip inspection.

I know of a Golf for sale in Bondi that was left there by an Irish Guy. Probably the same one
I think he owed the seller money and he was gonna sell it to recoup his loss.
He was supposed to bring it out to me, but never did. Just as well really, I have untold Mk1s and Parts.
Its meant to be a good car mechanically, but i never knew what colour it is.

mechanically it seems to be fine at first glance..(engine clean, no oildrips under car, starts first time,wheel arches and under car rust free...)
there are some cuts in the ceiling-fabric and backseat needs new fabric.
the paint looks a bit matte and is notthe nicest color blue.
rust is present on gutter and bottom of front doors, although it doesnt seem to go very deep.

well ill let you know what the mechanic says...

what is the driving like? will it pull up the hill easily or should i expect the kombi-experience? So fun to drive but so hard to get around..

Sounds like a bargain for $200.

OK here's the storey:

it took the mech about 1minute to conclude that the car wasn't going to be worth the money/effort...
Engine was awsome though...the body (first time that i actually inspected it in bright daylight) is quite rusty. The gutters, the doors...clutch needs work.

so far my watercooled mk1 career.

if anyone is interested in a project i could give them the owners email address.
he wanted 200 dollars for it but probably is negotiable.

Dom't give up Kombils. I am sure that you can find a reasonable Golf at a reasonable price. You drove it? They go well enough. 77 on is probably a nider model anyway as they were german assembled. Keep looking and keep us posted for advice! Cheers

I was visiting a friend at a workshop at Lansvale today and he has the nicest Mk1 that he wants to sell. He used to do em up years ago for his kids and customers and he still has 2 beauties, one he will never sell but the other is a ripper.
5 Door Mk1, Mk3 interior, shiny red paint, gti grille, uprated brakes, nice mags and tyres and lots of other goodies. He only want $1000 for it. I`d steal it from him for that, but I have enough cars.

Hi Kombils, welcome to a good place where you will make new friends ([mafia]wether you like it or not).
If you don't buy or don't want that mk1 if its in sydney please call me on 0400011102 or sms, cause I want one if i can get it for 200ish.
Beware of old car syndrome at the blue slip places, I have just had a mk1 blue slipped and my gosh it was a trial to find a place that would actually look at the car.
The rta and the mech get $25 each from your $50 so the mech will want to avoid your old car in favour of a 2000+ model bludge of an inspection where he'll copy down the numbers and skip the rest.
I was happy to fix anything on my car I was asked to fix for two reasons, because I could barter for parts with my friend golfloon on here and so parts are free so to speak, and I want to drive a safe car. my mechanic can do what I can't and replaced a part of the steering for me for a miniscule sum of $30!!! I brought him the part and said no warranty and no liability (if he smashed the car in his workshop i don't mind, i'll not ask for anything) GolfLoon gave me the part. I am an electronics expert and can fix anything electrical and can help you with your new golf, advice is free. step-by-step instruction is free. driving a cheap safe car is what I want and can't help but think everyone else with sense would want similar.
Anyhoo a friend recommended a place in sydney that could do a bluey after all my searching and trouble, but it was the $250 kind where you only need turn up with the papers and can leave the car at home. No good to me as the car can be fixed for less and i don't want to be driving a deathtrap. Loon suggested a place where we took it and it passed first go (although I have already done plenty of repairs and painting too).
This forum is for your Golf, there are forums for all kinds of cars, and my friend has a suzuki swift and i found a forum for him too.

A golf is a great choice, you can get a full set of parts for 200, advice for free, mates you can visit and tinker with the car and have a chat to. and they are PROPERLY designed, down to the smallest details, I can't lock my keys in my car, I can't start the starter motor with the engine on, it's all there and after driving a mitsubishi magna and countless L300's I'm in nirvana. I'm convinced mitsubishis are designed by the spawn of satan, and i think i can find some priests in the phone book who'll back me up on that.

I don't necesserely agree with the mitsubitshi remark.
Have you ever driven a Evo3 with 450+hp. Even a standard evo is a awesome package.

how hard is it actually(read:how much does it cost..) to remove the rust?
i know for kombis you'd spent at least 3000 to get it fixed and painted.

in fact, to fix it completely what would i be looking at?
as i said;engine is allright,clutch needs work,rusty gutters,rusty doors,awfull interior...

im just remembering all that power haha
well i guess from driving a kombi even supermarketcarts have more acceleration.

is the clutch spongy? then the problem is probly from the lack of rubber spacers between the cable and the lever i have the same problem on my car...
