Phew!
Yesterday we installed the new gearbox and temporary 1600 engine. To my amazement (and eternal gratitude to the CVWC team) it started almost first turn of the key and proceeded to idle smoothly.
Then Gareth reversed it out of the workshop... The look on his face was priceless "It seems a bit tight, here you have a go" I did and he was right. The LSD was making it almost un-drivable. It just tried to rip the wheel out of your hands - ferocious! The Kaaz manual emphasises that the "break-in" process must be followed or the diff will be ruined, so today I found a quiet car-park where I could spend 30mins doing slow figure eights (as per the manual). The first dozen loops I had to fight it every inch of the way, then suddenly it relaxed and the steering went back to normal - maybe a little heavier but nothing like the first few minutes.
After about half an hour I had had enough and the diff wasn't making any strange noises so we went home happy.
So a good ending to a slightly scary process. There was a time where I was thinking that it had all been a huge mistake (hmmm, $600 for the gearbox, $1800 for the LSD, $500 for the gb overhaul and diff installation - yeah in my cash-strapped world that is pretty huge). But as they say "It's all good"
No chance to try it out on the dirt yet so I still don't know how different the handling will be, but there's always next weekend.
started with replacing sump, that led to a little minor service (air & oil filters, sump and valve cover gaskets, oil and coolant), that led to basically all the braided line (both diesel return and breather hose) to split from me bumping against them and or looking at them the wrong way. After writing it down it all seems so insignificant and no more than an hour job, but its been the bane of my existence the last week, both trying to track down more braided line and trying to work in an open sided carport through torrential rain and storms.. lolz.. but the car feels great now.
Today i bought my First mk1 golf and drove it to the top of a hill that it failed to make it up, then called a tow truck and got the clutch and fly wheel booked in to be fixed!!!!

replaced the clutch with the help of jace today, basically went the long away about it.. not removing the little shield thing next the drivers side drive shaft flange, putting on and removing the pressure plate at least 3 times.. only to try turn it over after 8 or so hours and get nothing.. turned out ignition wire wasnt plugged to starter solenoid. Sorted! clutch feels great now!!
today i ordered a new, Distributor cap, Breather Elbow hose, Oil Dipstick, ignition rotor, all new hose piping, new radiator is currently trying to be sourced (not having much luck), Rear boot strut and hose clamps

Today i took my Radiator out ready for the new one coming in the post, washed the dirty water out of the system and degreased most of the engine! gonna try and clean the inside of the hoses from the rusty dirt rather than buy new ones as there in good condition on the outside. Does anyone know a good way to wash the rusty scale out? i have bought a rad cleaner formula but not sure if that will do the pipes? [IMG][/IMG]
