Are you saying a valve simply broke in two for some reason?.

The only reason that might happen would be impact due to it being incorrectly timed.
Valve stems dont just break for no reason, especially after hundreds of thousands of km. Of it was ever going to fail for no apparent reason it would have happened very early in the life of the engine

As to the replacement engine.... Seach eBay for your engine code.
          Is it an acv?

              Also vk2mad,

You mentioned it tested with no compression on any cylinders.... this can really only be the case if there was a systemic issue with the cam timing, not an individual component failure. One failed valve would give you no compression on that cylinder, but the others should be OK.

If the case is otherwise, then its practically a certainty that it was not reassembled correctly.

Unfortunately I was unable to have the motor assessed by an independent mechanic. I have to take the word of the repairer. I was shown the motor at each stage of disassembly and all appeared to be correct. If timing was problem then surely other valves would be damaged too as it went doing 110k/h. Metal fatigue is suspected or some problem with manufacture. All cylinder bores were scored but it makes me wonder if that alone would cause loss of compression. If I could figure out how to put up pictures on here I could show the damage

make an account with a free image hosting service like google drive or photobucket, and then you can copy the link to the image into your reply to the thread.
Theres a thread about it in the help section of the forum

Got some good news today. My replacement motor came complete. No external components to bolt on. Just needs the gearbox fitted and slot the whole thing in. So I now have an alternator, starter motor, fuel injection pump and turbo sitting in my shed. Anyone need anything?

Might you not keep them as spares?.
