Engine Exhaust Fault light

Hi all,
I have a 2005 Gold TDI. It's done 252000 k's. The exhaust system fault light came on the other day. I took it to my mechanic and his computer didn't show any fault codes. He reset it and I drove for about 3 three hours down the coast. When I stopped and restarted the motor the light came back on. Any ideas what it could be?
