How do I look after my Diesel?

So I've heard all about running in a car but been told it's different for a diesel.

I've been told not to thrash the diesel as the engines don't like it, but it likes a nice long drive for the run in.

So what's the best way to prime in my Diesel engine?

I've done about 1500kms, driven it quite conservatively apart from a few showoff S mode runs.

So how to I look after my new babe?

Drive it as you would any car, but take it for a highway run every so often to regenerate the DPF.

Don't be afraid to load the engine — diesels like to work — but don't over-rev it (pointless anyway...)

Aside from that, just keep the maintenance up, do the normal routine checks and it'll be fine.

If you use it a lot, consider a catch can on the engine recirc system to cut carbon buildup in the intake etc.

Incidentally, a Golf TDI was caught on the Monash this week at 200K+ and impounded — don't be that stupid (it was his mum's car...)

Look I have given it a few times stupidly, i was surprised how quickly it could hit 150-160. But that was a 'test' run for me and I will not be doing that on the regular. I drive for work cannot afford to lose my license.

Cool. I've read all about Additives for the diesel, is it worth it for the modern TDI? Is there a certain fuel I should aim to use? No idea about the variants these days for Diesel.

Will consider a catch can and look into it.

I plan on take a few highway runs, give it some kms and get it run in. I will drive Nashos in Sydney (not like a hoon though, just a leisurely drive because its a nice long drive and usually constant speed too.

There's an additives thread in the Diesel section and also one for 2 stroke oil as an additive. Read them and make your own mind up on whether you want to try either, neither or both.

As for general driving, there's not a lot of point revving out the engine in normal use but it is worth revving it out under load (ie up a decent hill) once a week to clear soot out of the turbo (or else do track days)

What ever additive you use, keep in mind that you could have a tough job to get the warranty honoured, if your car would have a problem related to the fuel and the VW dealer finds out that you've used the 2 stroke oil in the fuel as an additive.

Drive it like you love it for the first 1000k and then like you stole from then on

I'm nearly up to 20,000 km and it's not even 12 months old, I have only run clean diesel with no extras. The car is so grunty you don't need to add anything to the fuel.

I love how this car drives on the highway, it so stable on the road but be careful its quick to double the speed in seconds and you don't feel like you are going that fast (hot tip - set the speed limiter, better safe than impounded)

I don't like driving in S-mode it revs the engine to long over/around 4k, I find its better to short shift with the paddles or drive in manual mode.

Also when I have made it home from a slow commute home and the car is performing a regen I take it for a blast around the hills and make sure I really heat up the exhaust to burn the soot out the DPF.

I drove a 118tsi Jetta 7DSG the other day and I really could not wait to be back in my TDI, great cars the R-line TDI so happy with mine.

Just like golf mv11 said I just make sure that it's warmed up to 90 degrees first. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do ours

Possibly. It would be interesting to see a case where this happened and what the final outcome was. I haven't seen one case where a warranty claim was refused and believe me, i have searched before trying it myself. Given that it is the nature of people to complain louder than they praise on online forums, I would have expected to find some instance of this or even discussion of actual problems caused by 2 stroke oil being added to diesel fuel.

But 2 stroke oil is just "oil", especially a mineral based one, unlike something like biodiesel where VAG has actual stipulations against concentrations higher than 5%

I've used 2 stroke oil in my diesels for years and have never had any fuel related problems. Just the usual positive results, quieter, smoother, better MPG and hopefully the main goal of longer lasting fuel, engine and emission components.

Where do yo find the different brand CN numbers published? - I thought it was a siple case 'they all meet the legal min' of 51.
