    Hole in fuel line.

    Hi guys,

    Haven't posted here in some time.
    Just before NYE I got a hole in the fuel line on my mk5 1.9 tdi.

    No idea what has caused it. About 6 months ago the hose the connectSmto the fuel line on the right hand side got a hole in it and I replaced that but the fuel deteriorated the foam attached to the cover so I removed that. I have since replaced the foam with some aluminium backed foam from Clark rubber.
    Someone suggested it looks like it occurred from rubbing but I can't see where it would rub . I can't see much movement in the engine when started and revved up.

    Anyone got any ideas ?

    COuld it be rubbing on the plastic engine cover?

    I've seen those pipes rub through on various things before.

      Recommendations ? I have recovered the cover now with a thin aluminium backed foam from Clark rubber and I sliced open some rubber fuel line and clipped it over the line.

      Is it recommended to remove the cover all together ? Seems a bit louder if you do. Anyone else had issues with this on their TDI ?

        no, the cover will only cause a problem if something else isnt right.

        Check to make sure the stays for the fuel lines are all correctly mounted to the rocker cover, and that the piping and wiring is all sort of sitting right. a lazy mechanic might put it back together badly.

        Its also possible that something causing vibration (like and engine mount failure) is exacerbating the problem.

        If all the pipe stays are not correctly fitted, the piping may vibrate too much and fracture due to fatigue.

          If there is no sign of external rubbing it would seem to be fatigue from vibration.
          A strong magnifier might give a clue.

            I replaced one of the clips when I bought the new fuel line . All the pipes and hoses seem to be in the right place. Clamps seem to be secure. I guess I will monitor it and see if I have evidence of it starting to rub gain. Car is due for service so I will get the mechanic to check the mounts as well.

              Also it only seems to be the top pipe being impacted . I,d have thought vibration would cause stress of all 3 pipes ?

                perhaps, but it depends really. also, they are not all fuel pipes there either. IIRC, one is supply, one is return, and one is coolant or vacuum, I cant remember which.

                  Actually having looked at your photo ( i didnt realise I could see it full size!) it definitely looks like rubbing has caused that. something is not in the right place I would think.

                    Thanks guys.. I will moniter it and have my mechanic take a look next week. Don't want to have to pay for another line.. They charge a fortune
