That's what the OP was thinking of doing and why he asked about consequences of running a diesel empty.

Maybe he should "Just do it" rather than having circular conversations...

Sometimes I just want to get to my preferred brand.
Pretty close - I once put 55.5L in my 55 litre tank, filled it right to the brim tho. The car hadn't stopped yet when I filled it, so there was some more in there still. (It happened because I believed the km to empty on the dash display ... not recommended! It said 200km when I left home, 100km later it is reading 0km remaining. Should have been sceptical because the l/100km is also wildly optimistic.)

          ".....wildly optimistic"
I'll say.....reality strikes home as you say in the last 100km particularly in mine with a tuning box which indicates better economy at 100 than 80 and makes the maxidot figures a joke.

That's really interesting that you don't trust the MFD. Mine is within 0.1L/100km of the calculated figure.

You realise that you can tweak the L/100 average with VCDS?

Yeah I know, I just don't have VCDS.

Mine is about 10% optimistic vs fill calculations in stock tune and about 5% with the remap. I'd say your accuracy is exceptional as our Golf is similarly optimistic.

Why would the accuracy change with a remap? Isn't the calculation basically a combination of the amount of fuel going through to the injectors & the distance travelled?

Yes and No, it's the amount calculated from the injectors ON time.

I've never run out of diesel, but as gldgti says, the fuel system in Golf and other 4cyl. TDI should self bleed. Just turn the ignition ON/OFF several times and crank the engine, it will eventually start, just make sure your battery is healthy and in a good state of charge. Otherwise you get stranded even if you carry the 20L jerry can to fill up, once you runout of fuel.

The V6 TDI could be a different story when you run your tank dry, and some other Euro diesels like MB may need a lot of cranking before they start and in the process you could flatten even a fully charge battery.
