  • Odd oil consumption

The car is 06 PD100 Polo

Driving on the freeway back home this afternoon and the oil top-up warning light came on
I check the oil after I got home when the engine is still hot
The oil level is below the minimum mark on the dipstick

It's been 8140 KMs since the car was serviced
Rocker cover gasket and tandem pump gasket had been changed due to oil leakage with the service

This is the first time I got this warning light since I bought the car at 80K
It's a daily drive with spirit driving most of the time and have done 113K+
Just wondering if anyone here are have similar experiences?

I'm a bit worry as a ~2000KM trip that I had been planing on is on the way very soon
Is the car in such condition reliable on such trip?

Any help or suggestion will be gratefully appreciated

    Thanks
    Michael

    Michael,
I'd simply carry some oil for the trip if it's not showing any symptoms of failing other than oil consumption.

I have driven our Golf to Perth and back without any dramas. I did read in manual somewhere that you can use a litre for 1000 ks. But hasnt happened to me, except easter trip to perth and back in kombi. 2.2 litres used.

Checking for a leak would be an obvious thing to do wouldn't it? Most likely if you didn't have these issues before the repairs and you do after, then it is something they have touched. If there is no external leak, then I'd be making sure they resealed the injectors correctly and used the correct oil during the service(and filled it right up).

          Thanks guys for the responses
Yes I have bought some oil for the trip just in case
The car drives fine other than the oil consumption

What makes me wonder is the car has been top-up free for the last 68K
After 8140 KMs the car was serviced and the oil top-up warning light came on

There is no obvious oil leak since last repair
The injectors ain't touched so I wouldn't be worry about this

My first suspect now is the oil itself
I'll double check with mechanic what oil did he used
It's the first time I used him for servicing though

              He used Liquimoly TopTec 4200
              The spec seems alright
              But it's VW 506 oil
I thought my car needs 507 oil?

                Only if DPF equipped.

OK I've topped with 1L of Castrol Edge 5W30 before I leave
After the trip oil level seems to stay the same
Still can't figure why the oil level dropped so much

But the fuel consumption seems to increase by ~0.5L during the trip
Road conditions are most likely identical
Could be a result of mixing oil?

Toptec 4200 is 504/507, which is correct for your Polo. LM says it's ok for 506 applications, but not 506.01.

hey, i had the oil light come up on my car once, i posted on some other forums and was told it is quite normal and that i should be checking it frequently between services. I was worried because it was after a bit of spirited cornering, but its been fine for ages now

The car has been doing some regular highway drive since last serviced (~40KM each way)
Anyone know if this is related to the oil consumption?
I' just like to find out the cause, normal or abnormal

quite normal as in there are plenty of people with the same thing happening. From what i have read/experienced oil consumption changes depending on many variables including engine speed, temperature, weather, stop/start, oil type, break-in done correctly etc,etc..
