white(ish) smoke can be caused by oil, but your car has a dpf and really, any smoke at all is abnormal.
I would take it to a VW specialist.

Can you smell exhaust up under the engine bay, only because there is a EGR filtration system down behind the DPF in the MK6, a leak in that would make a funny whistle especially under boost. Heat would make a metal flange leak expand etc etc, and like Adian has said, no white smoke should get through a DPF ( white smoke will clog is quicker and it would be regenning more often though! ) but it could be getting through the EGR system.
As much as you say you don't think it is a boost leak, everytime I blew an intercooler plumbing boot, and I did it many times, it sounded like a vacuum cleaner on steroids. Given it gets worse hot, it must be a hard part that heats up, expands, and then leaks, say an intercooler plastic end tank....
Is the sound always there, even barely, or is it totally related to boost?

I do get exhaust smell coming into the cabin sometimes if the A/C is turned off and i just have the fans going.
My problem is it doesn't sound when in park, only under load so while driving.
A diesel specialist I took it to did a cool trick where he had the breaks on just enough to put load on the engine while accelerating next to a big wall in an industrial park so he could get a better understanding of the sound.
I believe it may be the flange leak you mention as it only starts once the engine is hot. Are you able to give me a decent understanding of where it is so that I could get my hands dirty and maybe take a look myself?
Sadly they charge 150 an hour and I cant afford that atm(Rego and insurance round the corner as well as next service), if it takes them 4 hours to diagnose the problem that's 600 and they may not even find the problem.
I'm not one to throw money at something until its fixed which is why I'm on here, for some decent ideas and maybe some DIY.

My vote is a EGR system metal pipe flange down below/behind the DPF ahead of the steering column. If it's leaking there should be a nice black soot coat on the metal nearby, that's what I would be looking for. The EGR pipes in VW are prone to cracking on the bends where the mandrel leaves tooling marks, mine recently split, but then I did subject it to a lot of experimentation.
I wonder if the MK6 has a problem in the EGR cooler setup, much like the 103 did over the 125 in the MkVs. The Audi A5 3.0 TDI engine almost always eventually has the EGR cooler leak and play up, seems to be a likely place to check for failure.

The V band clamp from turbo outlet to the DPF itself would also be worth checking, as would the sensors each side of the DPF cannister, any leak here would whistle like a bitch and yet the car would run fine.

Looks difficult to get to. Would need it up on something or would i need to remove the plastic and windscreen wipers to get into that space?
Would a stethoscope be of any use in detecting a leak in this instance?
It may be, I got a slight look at the EGR pipe you speak of, you can see it slightly from what I could see there was nothing. though what I could see wasn't much.
I will add that the sound is more common and happening more throughout the rev range. So I believe it is getting worse.
OK...so update on the issue. My car broke down after no mechanic could figure out what it was and I wasn't able to get into the right place either.
Cylinder 4 is misfiring and the injector is either damaged/seized or blocked. My mechanic doesn't have the tool to get the injector out so I need to get it to a mechanic or workshop that has the tools to flush/replace injectors.
Any ideas? My girlfriends dad mentioned a place in Kensington that works on quite a few golfs and has the tools for it.
Charges roughly 250ish to clean/flush and depending on what injectors are needed probably around 4-500 dollars. Hes also keen to have a look at my other issue that started this thread for 90 buks hes happy to go through and try figure out what it is.
This cars become more trouble than its worth, 120,000km its getting old though I think a bad batch I put 1 time from Metro never again cheap fuel. Biggest mistake, I could feel the difference in performance from the standard BP Ultimate.
Thinking of Diesel Polo for my next ride no tunes this time just some nice wheels and that's it.
Also any have a car trailer I can borrow? Not really looking forward to towing my car from caringbah to Kensington with a tow company...
