  • Excessively loud whistle

    Hey guys,

I'm not new to golfs in fact I've had mine for over a year and have had my romp around in the vwgolf forums.

I come to you with a really annoying problem.

So i have the 2.0tdi mk6 standard etc as you would expect.

It has been tuned to have 103kw and 390nm torque at the wheels.

While driving through the national park down south a month or so back something happened car kinda freaked out and it developed an excessively loud whistle sound kinda sounds like a vacuum cleaner on high. this happens when accelerating at around 1800rpm to about 3100rpm and it does get really loud, my mate likened it to a supercharger when i drove past his house and he was waiting for me to pick him up. my gf could clearly hear it from inside her golf tdi two lanes over with the windows closed and the music up.

My mechanic cant figure it out he said he checked over all the hoses and connections etc, hes done a dpf flush so the exhaust is all clear but still the sound is still there.

if it helps it doesnt do it when the engine is cold, only starts when the engine has warmed up and progressively gets worse. No loss in power though it seems to use more fuel than usual, as i was getting roughly 730ish km to a tank now i get about 550ish...

Yes i know its not the normal turbo boost sound so don't bother asking this is completely different its kinda like the boost sound on steroids or like a vacuum cleaner on max power.

    Cheers,
    Adam

variable vane control on the turbo?? If the vanes are out of position it whistles loud, the control ring can stick, the actuator can stick (sure mk6 is still vacuum), the actuator can loose vacuum. The VV control is easy to check/test with VCDS.

    just a thought.

Hmm, Is this something that common on the TDI? How would I go about telling my Mechanic to specifically look at this?
And in the instance where he may have already checked this?

Note: it doesn't do it while in park or in neutral only under load so when travelling/accelerating.

could have thrown a turbine blade, i've seen it happen on tdi turbo's before. If thats the case, it will be out of balance and REALLY noisy as you describe.

Not saying it IS that, but its a possibility.

Only thing is that it only happens once the engine has warmed up. I would think that if it had thrown a blade then the sound will occur constantly.

I have noticed that when switching off the engine there's a long wind down of the turbo.

that would probably be your fans, not the turbo.

When the oil is cold, the turbo will spool much slower than when its hot....

                  That makes sense.

Noticing quite a bit of white smoke now. Getting slightly frustrated with my mechanic as he's not being quite thorough enough, I know something is wrong but he says he's checked all the sensors and there's no odd readings.

I told him I don't want him checking data I want him going over the engine.

Next step is taking it to a diesel specialist.

My VRS Skoda developed a whistle after being tuned - it went away (mostly) when I upgraded the intercooler

That would create concerns (water loss) and needs to be promptly resolved - time to go to a different workshop

Now I'm worried, though it doesn't leak and water levels/oil levels are fine. Not much change in a month its been happening now.

I'm quite frustrated with it because I don't seem to be getting anywhere with my mechanic, he's great but with issues like this I've found he's not much good for solving problems.

Who in anyone's opinion would be best to go to and sort this out rather than splashing money here and there on things with no resolve.
