    TDI applies to both PD and CR doesn't it?

      TDI applies to just about all computer controlled VW/Audi diesels made after mid 1995 in Europe and 1996 in the USA. The mk3 jetta/golf could be an idi but if it has and AHU or 1Z engine code it's a TDI. It's a tdi with and injector pump which the CR and PD both don't have.

            I think all Oz-delivered-fully-imported-by-VW Mk3s had 1z Tdi engines, there were Idis in the UK at the same time, and a few may have crept over here.

            Just a final progress report, on the suggestion above I have checked, and replaced all the rubber hoses with silicon ones from Pirtek, and the turbo is behaving itself fine. 300km since Friday afternoon, in 110kmh traffic on a 29 degree day to Brisbane and back this morning confirms it's running well again

                Bugger it, no I didn't. Running up a very steep hill tonight, engine cool, not been used for 4 hours, managed to get into 2nd gear, the hill was so steep I had to get right up towards 4000 rpm to gearchange, still, all good in 2nd gear for a few seconds turbo whistling away, and suddenly the torque drops out and I have to quickly drop down to 1st to get up. Still it's much improved. I bought another 3 metres of 4mm silicon hose today, I'll change all the rest of the hoses over the weekend. if that doesn't work I'm changing the N75 solenoid/valve

                  Finally sorted it, and all it was, was the N75 valve!

                  I went through this trouble-shooting list:
                  How to troubleshoot low power on an A3/B4 engine - TDIClub Forums
                  I checked everything I could without an OBD tool and without a pressure gauge. I had replaced all the vacuum hoses between the turbo-charger, the N75 valve (on the left-hand guard on a Golf Mk 3) and the ECU a few months ago. The next step was going to be checking the intake manifold and turbo charger, but then I saw further down in the discussion a simple way to test the N75 valve, and so i did the test, and it was clearly at fault. New N75 valve from UK Ebay (but posted from Estonia!!) and the car is burning tyres again! Phew!
