That's an interesting point but I still get shivers when I contemplate a Range Rover's suspension longevity if I were to buy a 100K second hand one.

fair enough, I've a workmate and an uncle into range rovers and I reckon anything you can say thats bad about an audi is twice as bad for a range rover

It looks very tidy but is 2k over what I want to spend.

Did all the autos have tiptronic controls on the steering wheel? If one doesn't have it could you simply change wheels to one with the buttons and do a bit of VAGCOM coding or is it more complex than that? I suppose the airbags would pose a difficulty.

An 04 would be pretty good with a nice service history I reckon. They updated the cam followers to roller type which is a good thing regardless of whether you care or not about the infamous cam wear problems, and it will also simply have a couple less years worth of UV exposure, etc...

No I had not seen one without the controls on the steering wheel except for the one manual 2.7 I saw on carsales which has since been sold.

Most of the 04 onwards also seem to be missing the walnut trim. I kind of liked it but it's not a deal breaker for me. The tiptronic on the wheel is something I would prefer but I suppose not the end if the world. It's kind of nice though to be able to quickly override the shifting on a whim if you want.

Yeah service history is a must for me and the lower number of owners the better. I'm gonna try go look at one here in Sydney that's a one owner car. It's an 02 with 166k on it. The guy has explained that they did roughly 100k in it in the first 5 years since buying it new and then after that added another car as a daily driver. Again full service history, has upgraded audio/satnav.

Still my preference is for 04 or newer but seems diesels are few and far between in nsw.

Preference for silver or black if you see anything.

There's also a dream looking 4.2 04 with the works but my concern is the fuel economy. Would sound so good though.

oh yeah, I wouldnt buy either petrol, the 2.7 is getting on and complicated, the 4.2 is probably a bit less complex but would drink even more. I think good fuel economy should be one of the benefits of owning an old allroad... haha.

The silver ones look ok but i reckon watch out incase they have green leather, my goodness that is ugly.

I am often surprised how welld the bumpers plend with the ming blue on mine.

Haha yeah there was one I was really keen on when I first spotted the ad for it, it had lighter metallic green coloured paintwork but then the dark green interior. The outside I could put up with but inside too.... No thanks, who would tick that box when optioning up?

I've only seen 1 Ming blue allroad for sale but it's a 4.2 I reckon that colour is one of the best around.

I can though if you think it's warranted.
Another reason to stay away. If it's turning over owners fairly frequently (every 12 months or so) then they are probably moving on their problems.

                      Haha

GldGti sorry to derail your thread, but it gets the most response!

I got an email back from the owner of the black 04 in vic with 190k on it.

She has sent me photos of service book. got the car in 09 with only 35k on the clock. The original owner went less than 6k per year and it was getting serviced yearly filling the first 5 service sections in the book but way under travelled distance schedule. Has had front bags replaced early 2011, major service - cambelt, waterpump and pump belt at 102k (I'm assuming that means toothed belt as well as it's not in any of the original book service boxes) and rear bags mid 2012. She lives on the outskirts of Melbourne so her km has apparently been done with daily driving into the cbd and a few trips away (Alice springs, mount Gotham etc)

Car looks pretty tidy and has the tip steering wheel controls but again is missing the walnut trim. Probably the best diesel I've seen in the past few weeks I've been hunting.

                          And in the budget!

A few new ones have popped up on carsales but this is still the most promising. A vicco road trip might be on the cards.

Took delivery yesterday of my 2 new mufflers for the allroad. New exhaust fab job will be soon

I went for 2x straight through glasspack with a 4" tip, thinking it would look a little over the top, but when i got home last night and compared the tip to the gap in the bumper, its nothing at all! going to look very sneaky, a little like this in size:
