Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

Definitely a tune for best bang for buck. There are a few to choose from. I opted for CustomCode ECU and DSG tune. The increase in power and shift response is night and day over stock. Next I highly recommend but others will debate is a SprintBooster. It eliminates throttle delay and definitely compliments the tune. Check out my build thread for more info. ForceFeds Project TDI.

Correctly tuned diesels should not blow excessive smoke. It's the 21st century and any car that does, has some problem with it. The point of manufacturers fitting DPFs, is to reduce further the particulates.
They should run completely clean like a petrol during cruise and you may see a puff from the exhaust briefly when a large throttle input is made.
If it pours black clouds all the time it's accelerating, that's wrong.
Makes no difference whether you start with a new or older vehicle. The engine/turbo combo is the important choice IMO.

I can take you for a drive in my tuned TDI since you're in Adelaide. Poyta has a GT sport TDI he is Adelaide also.
Unfortunately you won't keep up with a Golf R unless you whack on a bigger turbo and some bigger nozzles and then get it retuned. Max power output of a modded 103tdi is nearly 300HP at the wheels
