  • 2.0 TDI intake Help needed.

im trying to get an idea of what i can do as for an intake on my TDI Golf.

European automotive performance, maintenance, and repair in New York City. Tyrolsport sells and installs Audi, BMW, Porsche, Mini and VW performance products from all top name brand manufacturers.

i am in love with this VWR intake but its made for the TSI motor but in saying that i don't see any reason that it would not fit my TDI could this cause any damage my car?
i was seeing if anyone here know if it is possible or can recommend me a nice intake of this style.

Id just like to mention that i know an intake does sweet F*** all performance wise and i can go a much simpler way but i simply have fallen in love with how this sits in the engine bay (Seen on a friends MK6 GTI)

    Thanks lhennessy

        2.0 TDI intake Help needed.

I have that intake installed on mine. Nice piece of kit IMO.

Bear in mind if you go for the VWR intake you will have to modify it and make a tap into the silicon hose for the vacuum line.

Again see my thread with how the BMC intake was installed prior to the aFe intake.

Another option is the APR unit - check out my thread which details my installation

I've driven Force Feds AFE intake installed Golf and my APR definitely has more induction noise but then again we have different turbo's too. Like ForceFed said there's modification required with the VWR so its up to you if you want to bother- I thought the no issues perfect fit APR unit was great.

So what exactly is the mod and what does it do and why is it needed?

I mainly want a goof flutter/spool you could spend $100 or $1000 on an intake its not going to be a big difference in the power felts its mostly noise.

+1 APR for noise. It's not cheap though and these days APR has forced overseas sellers to stop shipping to Australia. Still you could use a service like shipito.com to forward from a US address. the price difference is something like $300 from US compared to $500+ here.

One thing I don't like is the (I think K&N) oiled filter they use in the APR. Ideal solution would be to buy the APR intake, and change the filter out to the aFe Pro Dry S. Theoretically if you go light on the oil your MAF will be fine with an oiled filter but it has been shown that the standard cotton gauze type filter actually lets in a lot more dirt.

Also I'd think the aFe "stage 2" kit is barely a stage 1 since it retains almost all of the OEM piping and therefore also all the bends and restrictions. The APR and BMC intake will get rid of all the bends and pipe the air straight through.

IMO you have the APR and BMC CDA for carbon CAI intakes on the TDI, there really isn't any point in going the VWR route and spending effort modifying it. BMC is cylindrical similar to the VWR and APR has its own shape which I actually prefer.

Its the brass connector with the vacuum line going to it in the middle of the first picture below. As most of the intakes for the Mk5 platform are for the petrol versions, you may have to rig up something so that this feature is retained (depending on what intake you go with).

Here is another example (my intake, which I've since removed). You'll notice the vacuum line going to a white T piece with one end blocked off. All i had to do was drill a tiny hole in the connecting pipe and push the T piece in.

Heres a clip if Gregs (forum member's) modified modshack intake and its noise. Just be mindful that he has a slightly different turbo...

Personally, i reckon you're much better off getting a cat-back if you want to improve the noise of your car.

And here is some unrelated porn (over 300 horses and still runs the stock intake according to their website) ...

Yeh after looking around I think I will wait and do other stuff first, a friend is sourcing some OEM Look xenon headlights but they are around 600 so I might do them or springs first

The APR Carbonio intakes are a waste of $350, they are a crock and a scam...Save it and put it into tires or suspension.
                            Something worthwhile.
