I have just purchased some new 19" wheels for my T5 from a tyre dealer thinking that it will be easy to find tyres with the correct load rating and diameter for it, not so

According to the NSW RTA and my insurance company I can't go any more than 15mm + or - to the std tyres, thanks to the tyre dealer for letting me know what is or isin't on the market. Can anyone advise me on my dilemma.

have a look for a continental tyre in the size you need - i'd say its a good bet - they will be expensive though.

Have checked out every tyre on the market, might have to go 102 load rating instead of 103. Tyre dealer wont even consider exchange with 18" set.

I've seen a T5 with 20' rims .. it was brand new, the dealer put them on, and I asked the dealer about the load rating and he told me that the (continental IIRC) tyres he had fitted were load rated corectly (but very expensive)
So I see no reason that you could not get 19's to suit

You can use 235/45/19 tyres if you can find some. they are 0.6% larger than standard 235/55/17 tyres. 100k's to 100.6k's difference, overall they are very close in size.

Yokohama has released a tyre for SUVs and I guess "bigger" vehicles in general. The ADVAN ST comes five 20" tyre sizes:

245/50R19
255/50R19
275/45R19
285/45R19
295/45R19

They look to be too wide though.. but anyway, the load ratings for the above tyres start from 105W for the 245/50 and up to 109W for the 295/45R19.

What tyre size are you looking for anyway? And how wide are your new wheels?

You should be able to source some rubber for them, but that's not going to help you with the legalities or the insurance dilemma.

Rims are 8.5" x 19" tyres need to be 255/40-19 103 to keep it legal.

i did a quick search...can't find anything over 100 load rated...

The gross vehicle mass of the T5 Transporter is maximum 3,000kgs.

A 103 load rating means 875 kg per tyre....times four that's 3500 kg

A 100 load rating means 800 kg per tyre....times four that's 3200 kg...which is still 200 kg more than the legal GVM.

And when you bear in mind that the three 255/40R19 tyres I saw have load and speed rating of 100Y which means they must be able to handle 800kg at 300 km/h.......and you won't even see half this speed in a T5.....I suspect they can manage.

To cover off....you could get an automotive engineer to de-rate your GVM down to 2800kg or so.

According to VW the 128kw LWB GVM is 3200. even though the rego lable says 2800 and compliance plate says tyres to be 103 ( 875k) go figure?
