After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.
I've got a complete running 1.6TD in a car in the shed. Its unregistered and likely to be for some time. I would like the driveability and economy of the TD motor in the daily. It just means that i will have two demotored red GLDs......
Im currently nuts deep in the same conversion. I got to drive the 1.6td while is was still in a passat and it felt like it had good power. it was definately more powerful than my 1.5 with the Governor mod... and if felt like it has more power to give up as it was choking higher up in the revs like my 1.5 use to.
It should be a pretty quick turn around as you have everything. Mine is taking me for ages as the engine mount on the passat is different and incorporated the pump bracket... so i had to pull the pump completely off and change the engine mount as well... I cant wait to get up running again...
Lots of Deiselers in Oz would kill for that engine in am mk1... No use just leaving it on the shelf.

The VE pump has a complex governor system, that varies with engine rpm. There is a flyweight mechanism in the pump top that works against the throttle linkage (which is a spring) to decrease fuelling with increasing pump speed. If you stiffen the spring between the throttle input lever and the governor mechanism, you increase the fuelling over the entire rev range (and increase the rev limit).
That is the governor mod, in short.

This motor has a k24 turbo, which is big. I will probably swap it for a k14 as I have a couple of these spare.
I noticed when removing the drive shafts that if I turn one flange, the other turns in the same direction. I can get the other flange to turn in the opposite direction only if i put it in gear (and theres a bit of friction to overcome). Does this indicate that there is an LSD in there or just that the spider gears are stuck? I will replace the flange seals as they are leaking so I might be able to tell from that..... Gearbox code is 8A

Hey Ayden, this motor is very sooty when given a mild poke off idle (in neutral). It pulls well up to around 80km/hr then it seems like when the turbo is producing boost (maxes out at 10psi) there is no more fuel. Any advice on where to start with tuning this motor would be appreciated. Before i do too much I will install an EGT gauge that I have here, plus an intercooler and 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust. I just need to fab a downpipe as the standard unit would make a good funnel (2.25" down to 1.5"!)

I dont know how the engine ended up in the Passat... and unsure of the VW history. But it was a genuine 1.6td...
I will go and open up my 1.5 pump and show you what mods I did... When i get around to doing the 1.6td i will get a gasket kit as the throttle shaft leaked after I did the mod...
With the mod it would continually pull till i wanted it to stop... If you drive your 1.5 till the red marks on the speedo (i.e. max suggested revs for that gear) you will feel it starving but still be able to make it to those marks. With the Gov mod you will easily be able to rev over these and still feel it pulling all the way.
Ok into the Shed with my video cam and a walk through of the Gov mod.... Stay tuned.....

Hey mate,
The diff doing that is normal, dont worry about it.
Your pump looks like a good one, it should have a proper boost pin and the adjustable spring seat for the boost diaphragm in the pump top.
First thing I would do is turn the fuelling down a little bit, then adjust the boost pin to the most agressive taper. Theres a lot of things to adjust but without seeing it running or driving it its difficult to make a good judgement about how to tune it.
If you find the governor is cutting in in a really big way, then i'd look into doing the gov mod. just shim the main spring in there with some little washers or a M5 nut or something.
A K14 will be really cool in the mk1, but the k24 should give you better performance if you can tune the pump to deliver the fuelling well and have a good exhaust so help the spool up.
Anyway, 10psi is not enough - you want at least 16-17psi and more with a good intercooler setup.
