Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

  • Green vehicle guide unkind to diesels

The mob I work for will give you free fuel if your lease car has rating of 4 or more stars as published on the Green Vehicle Guide website.

Seems I miss out by half a star because I had chosen the diesel over the petrol Superb.

Even the petrol Commodore has 4 stars. What the?

Oxides of Nitrogen and particulates. Petrol cars produce more CO2 and other "greenhouse" type gasses, and generally use more fuel per km, but diesels in turn produce more NO and particulate matter.

There is no ideal green answer, but downsizing and newer technology such as hybrids is on the right track.

The challenge is in improving efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas and other emitted pollutants at a rate greater than China and India and Brazil and Russia take up the automobile. Otherwise the net effect is still growing GHG emissions.

It's quite amazing, the Volkswagen Golf 103TDI Comfortline is 4 stars in manual and 3.5 in auto...

... then the 4L V6 Ford Territory is 3 stars even though it uses more than double the fuel and produces twice the C02...

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

...and double the initial materials to build in the first place!

i think this should tell all of us something about the (in)validity of the rating system.

let me guess, the NRMA had something to do with it? or some other joke mob that are supposed to be experts no doubt.
