Does anyone know if the 1.9 block was ever cast in alloy?

ahh i see
the new 16V tdi's (2l) are i think alloy block engines....
my grandfather has built his own aircraft too - a Jodel D18. Its under experimental registration because its VW aircooled powered, but my grandfather, dad and uncle and myself (who all help/ed to build, fly or maintain the plane) all think a vw watercooled diesel would be the real ants pants - the range would be fantastic!
i think compared with the weight of the usually employed Rotax engines it would unfavorable, even with the 2l block....
however, lets not forget that VW make some smaller diesels too - the 1.4 from the european versions of the polo and lupo.'07 Touareg V6 TDI with air suspension

engine classes
the engines class you are thinking of is the 912 rotax which produces 80 hp 100hp and 115hp turbo. I think the jodel j18 is about 100hp. The 2.0 litre tdi would be a replacement for the larger 150-200 4cyl lycoming engine. The centurion engine I linked to was designed to replace a 160 hp engine. In the end the managed to squeeze around 130 hp at 3400 or so rpm and ran it through a gearbox to reduce rpm. It got its own back from the torque multiplier of the gearbox and torque is what you want to spin a constant rpm prop,
next dumb question: gldgti do you reckon you could graft a mtdi pump onto the two litre 16v alloy block? required for reliabiltySpark ignition is a threatened species

at the end of the day, any vw diesel engine is just pistons and valves, and you fuel it the way you see fit i suppose. haivng an aircraft application is good for this reason, since you can simplify the tune to a narrower rpm range and it makes tuing an whole new fuel system easier'07 Touareg V6 TDI with air suspension
