I bought 10L of Penrite HPR Diesel 5W-40 fully synthetic today for $87. Changed the oil and immediately notice that the engine is quieter and smoother. (always have used the 15W-50 semi synthetic before now).

I note on the back that it conforms to CI-4 (supercedes CH-4). a look on the penrite website (a very good webiste i have to say) shows that the HPR diesel 5 covers VW 506.01 standards - but the ash content clearly means it doesnt qualify for DPF fitted vehicles. therefore you use the enviro+ one.

Further to hiho's original post - i think the 15w50 would be great for the old non-turbo diesel aswell, proving your seals are all up to scratch.

Would you know if it is approved by VW for 506.01 or it only says it could be used where 506.01 is required?

Just off topic, I changed oil yesterday in my T5 and put Liquid Moly EngineProtect in the oil and noticed the engine runs more freely now, especially during take off.

P.S. Just checked Penrite website HPR5W-40 Diesel is not approved for VW506.01 their Specs sheet says "MEET" which doesn't mean Approved (also means it could pass in VW test if they submit sample to VW for approval).

yeah - the difference between 'meet' and 'approved' are important to note i guess. it's not surprising that it isnt 'approved' however, since penrite, on the world scene, is such a small player - and that its an aussie based company.

well, i'm not too worried - the sticker on my rocker cover says "use only oils that comply with VW standard 505.00"

i think to comply is to meet

I'm running the Penrite Enviro (5W-30W) atm and yeah it's great oil but I was looking for Mobil 1 but there's not a single place I could find. Also I picked up Penrite Enviro for $75.00 from a local distributor. Do you know anywhere in Sydney to buy Mobil 1.

I've tried alot of oils including Nulon, Shell & Penrite... so far penrite has proven the best, including better consumption (it's petty but feasible over the long run). Just need to wait for the verdict after 7500 km's. Oh that on a 1.9 tdi (vw 505.01)

Find Mobil1 in the white pages and ring them for local distributor.

Must be more distributors than Repco only. Repco puts huge margin on everything they sell, don't buy it for that price. Ring Mobil again and ask for more distributors or all distributors and shop around.

Cetane improver reduces smoke and reduces diesel clatter. It's worth the difference in price between BP Ultimate or Caltex Vortex Diesel and standard diesel.

Probably worth more if you have a DPF, since less smoke should mean less DPF clogging.

If you're talking cetane, it affects the combustion process and therefore is relevant to *any* engine that uses diesel fuel.

Whats cetane got to do with sump oil? I know my golf will run on it, but i prefer it when it doesnt.

You almost need a high cetane engine oil with the sheer amount that gets ingested from the blowby...
