use an OEM filter (hengst, etc). the oem ones are longer have much larger filter area. the general part number is z89A

i recommend penrite hpr diesel 20w-60 for use in hte old 1.5 - i always got best results with it.

In your shoes I'd also be going Penrite. Their website has a great oil recommender-er. If I didn't need this 507 high shear stuff and have a easily ash blocked DPF I'd be penriting the TDI now.

Yep, that's the one - Enviro+ 5W-30. For all those poor folk with DPFs. Running it now.

Costs about the same as the "real" stuff from VW! I paid $70...bugger!

I looked into oils only a few days ago. Heres a great faq for tdi owners:

for pre tdi diesel motors i believe the oil needed is 505.00

ps: mobil 1 delvac is approx $99 and redline is $150+

                  taken from that link:

"In warm weather, a good-quality non-synthetic oil meant for diesel engines with CG-4 or CH-4 ratings may be used. They're not suitable in cold weather due to reduced cold-pumping properties, and it's prudent to shorten the oil change interval because non-synthetic oils may not resist breakdown at high temperatures as well as the synthetic oils (remember that turbocharger). These oils are much easier to find. These include:
                  Mobil Delvac 1300, 15w40
                  Shell Rotella T, 15w40
                  Chevron Delo 400, 15w40"

in other words, in a warmer climate like here in australia (generally), a good quality diesel rated 15W oil is a sensible choice. this is why i use the penrite.

i'm considering changing to the fully synthetic penrite for the winter though...

That amsoil oil isnt properly rated, the only amsoil ones are 5w-40 Synthetic European which is $18 per quart or the 10w-40 high performance which is $90 for 5L.

Distributors only. There is no Amsoil on the shelves.
Look in the White Pages or Yellow Pages.
I buy some of Amsoil products.
Amsoil Power Foam cleans the combustion like nothing on the market, Cetane Improver is good, Engine Flush is excellent, P.I. petrol additive is average.
Amsoil oils are well priced if you compare them to oils available from shops.

Is cetane improver like an octane boost thing for petrol motors?

                            What's it worth?

Yes, but don't expect that it will increase the performance too much.
