There have been discussions about whether the extra vibrations could prematurely fatigue the teeth in the gearbox when a DMF is replaced with a solid flywheel. This is not likely with a commercial vehicle but many passenger cars use transmissions from a common parts bin so it's something to keep in mind.

Why don't I 100% believe everything that I read on the first site (first link, first post) in relation to my car? Oh right, cause they list a whole bunch of products for yanky tank trucks with duallies (wheels, not Flywheels here) and nothing for our dubs?

That's not to say they wrong, incorrect etc etc. But I'd much rather trust a VW specialst about this sort of topic, rather than an american truck specialist; since they're definately two very different kettles of fish! (1.9TDI vs 7.trillionL cummins diesel?)

Just saying, always worth looking at the bigger picture.

Having said all that, I don't even know if I have a single or dual mass, so I'll have to research it more. My suspicious tend to have me believe that I've got a single mass though.

I'm moving to a SMF when my current clutch dies, (surprisingly it hasn't even with 140,000km on the clock and the car has been thrashed, has intake, exhaust and ecu reflash) With regards to the comment regarding reliability, the PD series engines besides the Cam lobes and a few other issues have proven to be really reliable with people making 200hp at the wheels (and more) and some of those getting up towards 500,000km on the factory engine.

          Hi,

Im looking to buy a golf TDi, 2005 DSG. It'll be my first ownership of a modern vw and DSG. Ive been reading the horror stories of the gearboxes failing and im worried about the high k's of the prospective vehicle has (131,000k).

Is it the dual mass flywheels that fail and take out the gearbox/bell housing, or are there other things that go wrong? Ive also spotted a DMF on ebay for about $700, if i was to go for a golf tdi with a higher mileage should i just go ahead and get a new DMF fitted as a precautionary measure, or can you tell when its on its why out? I test drove the car and the gearbox was really smooth, no jerkynes or juddering. Perhaps its had and easier life on the highways?
