GLD air filter filling with oil on long trips!

Hello again all,

The Passat that I am looking at buying for the motor has one problem - on long trips it suddenly starts billowing smoke and keeps running (even when the ignition is turned off).

This sounds like the result of massive blow-back (due to worn rings) but the engine was 'reconditioned' 80,000kms ago at a cost of $1200! The owner tells me that the problem is due to a bypass valve or something - just a simple fix.

Can anyone shed some light? Is the engine stuffed? or is it a simple fix?

There was a modified breather setup. Originally the breather hose went straight to the airbox but the modified one also went down to the blank where the fuel pump would be on the petrol motors.
$1200 is not a lot for an engine rebuild. Be careful. Does it start easily cold?

Hi,

I 2nd that recommendation to check that the breather mod is indeed fitted. This was the subject of a recall back in the early eighties. Another mod that is very worthwhile is to fit the plastic cam cover from a later model over the camshaft - this helps prevent oil being sucked into the breather pipe. There is no valve in the breather pipe. The worst case scenario is that the rings are (very) worn. $1200 doesn't sound enough for rings & bearings to have been done, so the "rebuild" was possibly only the top end

Also check that the mixture screw on the injection pump is not turned up too much, this can give a similar effect, typically after idling for a while a slight touch on the accelerator will cause the engine to "take off". Another symtom of too much fuel is the engine being slow to return to idle after being revved.

This has been a problem with many high-speed diesels with positve crankcase ventilation.

blow by can be exacerbated by using average oil or oils not suited to diesels...

the breather pipe will always help, but wont fix the cause of the problem - new rings might.
