0.0 L/100k
I was listening to the radio the other day and Will Hagen said that when the fuel usage readout is 0.0 it really is zero. I always thought it would be pretty low - just enough to keep the engine alive while it was engine braking ie less than idle.
When at idle my 2.0TDI ranges between 0.5 to 0.7 L/100k
What do you guys think? Is the fuel usage really zero when engine braking - I always thought some of the "idle" fuel would still be required.

Polo TDi Fuel Costs 1st 50,000 klm
A friend has been keeping stats since day 1 - May 2006 - when he bought his Polo TDi. Note: consumption really improves after 30,000klm. The first line is the overall average for the 51849 klm to date. The blank lines is where a service was done. Sorry about the allignment. Hope you can work it out.

there is no need for a diesel engine to use any fuel during an engine braking scenario whatsoever. i used to have a manual switch for the fuel solenoid on my old mk1 gld which cut off fuel completely, and not surprisingly, the engine works just the same without any fuel in that situation as if it has idle fuel.
it is very likely that the ecu mappings on the new tdi's allow no fuel though during no load operation/above idle speed because this is a sensible way to reduce fuel consumption. there is no engineering reason why this could not be done.'07 Touareg V6 TDI with air suspension

Have a round trip to work of 40km.@ mostly 100km/h.
Oneway is part down hill. Been getting 5.5 and the other 5.1

Adding to this- if you are saying your engine is doing 0.5-0.7l/100km at idle- is this while stopped?
This would be infite litres/100km if you are doing 0 km/h while it is telling you that...Peugeot 306 XTDT 1.9 Turbo Intercooled Diesel

My new TDI DSG Comfortline..
I havent let my tank run almost empty till today and the tripmeter indicated 777Km, I filled till it was almost running out the filler neck , 47 liters used so gives an average of 6.04L/100km although the trip #2 indicated 6.7L/100km?? Go figure.. I also noted my GPS tells me the speedo is indicating 106Km/hr at an actual 100Km/hr. I run the aircon 100% of the time set to 22Deg as the 30 something outside is somewhat uncomfortable.
Fuel consumption at standstill is around 1.2L/hr, AC running and 0.9L/hr with it off. Car has 2000Km on the clock. Tinted windows yesterday.. Towbar last week ( Did it my self ) wiring for towbar yet to be completed ( see the thread on the towbar wiring hassles ) So far so good.

Filled up for first time today.
954km on one tank, put in 53.1 litres.
I think the tank from memory is 55.
Trip from central coast to Bowral 230km averaged 5.3 and return trip 4.2
(MFD)
Return trip is down hill. no air con and traveling at speeds of 90-110 for
run in period.
Filled up with BP. I suspect the dealer did not use bp as I have not seen
any around there service centre. So will be interesting to see if I can
improve on economy with bp.

nice numbers - 4.2... hehe
my mk3 economy keeps improving - i've tinkered so that the turbo is always operational (electronic wastegating) and the low rpm timing retard is disabled...
that change alone (after 3 tanks) ahs improved the economy from averaging 6.4l/100km to 5.75l/100km.'07 Touareg V6 TDI with air suspension

Golf V 1.6 Fuel Consumption
My Golf V 1.6 is used only for travel from Sydney to Hartley, and some occasional running around in Sydney traffic.
I normally get 950km to a tank and 980 on the odd occasion if I travel too far beyond the fuel light turning on.
According to my glovebox manual my tank is 60 litres capacity which equates to 6.3 litres per 100km. I use regular unleaded fuel.
The trick is to keep the revs below 3000 RPM and short shift where possible. The only exception is when screaming up Mt Victoria in 2nd Gear at redline, whilst praying that I do not break a connecting rod in the process.
P.S My car only has a 77mm piston stroke and a stupidly long rod ratio, so revving the freaking bananas out of the engine would not be that bad (I hope).
