Clean install again it must be said.
Yes, just 12.5mm clear vinyl tubing forming the loop and long enough to hold a small amount of oil. The other end of tubing is just bend and tied with the plastic

tie. I check the tube weekly; drain it probably every 3 months. So far I’ve done 65,000km. Top up between 7,500km oil changes is around 1/2Lof oil; I top up

only when the oil level gets bellow min. mark on the dipstick.

I believe that changing the engine oil more frequently has positive effect on the amount of the blow-by gas since the clean oil will give a better piston seal

hence the less of the blow-by gas.

I got mine from HSY Imports in Adelaide and they are supplied by Man Hummel in Sydney. I think it is cheaper to go directly.

Yep, I have to go and see that filter before committing myself for this job. I wonna see if it can be mounted somewhere in the front near EGR valve... They are in Blacktown, might go there this Saturday morning.

if one were to, hypothetically, get their hands on 45-50 extra horsepower, and 75-80 extra nm torque, would this result in an even greater need for a provent? i presume the answer is yes, but i was just wanting to check......

                          Don't waste money.
Put $104 towards the proper thing.

Nop, it's made of metal and I found one guy who moded it:
                            http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1940008
I would go for proper one provided I can fit it in.
Has anybody got photos of Provent in mkV ???

I tried a simple aftermarket catch can, and it was a messy disaster. The TDI flows a LOT of oil vapor, and I actually forced some oil out through my turbo bearings as the aftermarket cans are designed for lower compression, lower flowing gas engines. They just can't handle the volume, and cause backpressure, and that oil has to go somewhere! Talk about exhaust smoke!

You NEED a high flowing Provent, designed with trucks and the like in mind. And again, the problem is tubing, I have high quality hose that will fit over the Provent fittings, but the hose is HUGE, and too hard to work with in the engine bay, so I actually used the smaller hose I bought to fit the drain. And yes, it's sikaflexed in. Remember it has to handle both oil, and the hot engine bay temps. I have spent over a hundred and three trips to a hose specialist to try and make a better hook up, and have given up for now as the glue job is both flowing nicely, and not leaking. I figure if it's working, well I'm happy. I appreciate it could be better, and hope someone out there has a better answer for the cramped MKV engine bay. You could install it beside the EGR valve, there is space, but I wanted it out of the way, and had plans for that front space for bigger inlet plumbing and possible water intercoolers when I did it. I will revisit my install, as this sludge issue is a concern, and I want to solve it.

                              From where the airbox sits....

From the top beside the battery....

It's physically bigger that you might expect, fatter than a big coffee cup, and about as long as two. I got mine from Sydney filter services, but you can look up Mann and Hummell on the net and contact their office in Sydney. Prepare yourself for a $200 plus bill though!!

The other biarch is the other end, at the tappet cover and inlet. The inlet comes in vertically, and I actually cut mine down. Unclip the short tube that's there stock, and see what I mean. It's not easy to get a bend or a 90 degree elbow off the top of the air inlet, and have it look pretty!

If you do want to check your sludge situation, it's pretty easy on the 2.0 TDI. There's a simple spring clip that holds the intercooler hose into the throttle flap mech. Pull this off, and the hose can be bent out of the way. Stick you finger in there, and enjoy.

As mentioned earlier, be careful spraying carb cleaner up there, as even after being left open to air for a few hours, mine did a very aggressive startup on the carb cleaner vapours that were left, bit of a rev! I'd suggest a rag, mirror, and some cleaner as a last effort. Blow it out well!

Removal isn't easy, as Hi Torque found!
