  • Scan tools with best functionality for the money?

Hi all, i am getting set for some maintenance on my new to me 2013 Passat 2.0 TDI. Reading the Erwin manuals i have downloaded it suggests I need Volkswagen software to enable the fuel priming pump to prime up the fuel filter. I am sure filling the filter may get around this issue, but I don't want to be stuck with a dry fuel system and a car that wont run! I also want to permanently disable to stop start system as this is annoying and hard on batteries and starter motors.

I have borrowed an Icarsoft tool which will not give me this functionality. Is there a tool on the market that will provide this level of function without spending big bucks on Vag-com or VCDS, as i only have the one car and spending $800+ on a diagnostics tool doesn't interest me at the moment! I am looking at the foxwell NT510 tool and the I link 400 tool, which appear to offer adaption and coding. Does anyone have any advice on any of the above. Thanks in advance Matt

does obd eleven allow you to change things like the stop/start and switch the pump on and off etc?

I’m pretty sure that you have to get to a very low level in the Ross Tech tool to disable start/stop. Dunno anyone who’s found a way with OBD11. Re running the low pressure pump - check the obd11 site - lots of good info on the forums. I picked up an android tablet last week - my obd11 stuff is on order, hopefully arriving my mid-may.

i reckon you’re right about filling the filter canister with diesel though. It’ll probably cough a few times as it purges the small amount of air out of the common rail.

good to have another tassie owner that likes to swing the spanners that being said, my wife’s Passat is taken care of under a prepaid service program, and I cbf’d doing mine myself. Of course that leaves me plenty of motivation to do my own work on my bike.

I think i will go that way for the service this weekend, I'm not a huge fan of prefilling filters, a quick way to get smacked fingers where i work (big nono according to the OEM) but its effective! And i suspect that the majority of service centers probably just fill the filter anyway. My poor old bike is just sat in the corner of the shed, no motivation after working on gear all day and then have three cars to service and maintain.

you’d probably loose feck all out of the canister anyway. Only difference being removing a saturated element replaced with a dry one. Be interested to know how you go with it.

or......pull the fuse for the injection system
                Cheers

Fill the filter canister with liqumoly diesel purge and clean your injectors at the same time. Simple. Minimal air gap. Efficient, two birds , one stone. As they say.

Carried out the service over the weekend, prefilling the filter worked a charm, a few extra revolutions on the starter and no other issues. overall not a bad car to service, nothing too out of the ordinary. at 60,000km the fuel filter was putrid. i will be changing it at 30,000 or less, not comfortable with leaving an important item like that for the recommended 90,000!

60K is the correct interval for the filter. I'd probably run some DPF-friendly treatment through the tank prior to changing the next one.

Yes the obdelleven does run the fuel pump and will also invert the stop/start button. (Press the stop/start button to enable the function not press to disable as standard)
