Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Keeping Right side Footrest cover in place

    Hi

I got a set of the stainless footrest covers that match the brake and accelerator pedals

The kit came with screws and washers for the left one and they worked well
(although I countersunk the holes instead of using the cup washers)

But the right one is held on with double sided tape - well, is supposed to
almost every time I put my foot on it I can feel it move so the tape is not too effective
When vacuuming the floor a simple bump with the vac hose and it falls off
My preferred fix would be a small screw top and bottom but I have no idea what is behind the panel

    Question is
Has anyone else fitted these and if so have you had same problem
If "yes" what was the fix

    Thanks in advance

Hi I put heaps of thin double sided tape on mine so it does not show through and preped the surface with acetone before sticking it on. It's never moved in the 2.5 years it has been on. A few small self tapping screw should be OK as well but I have not needed them.

Only use the right foot rest when cruise is on anyway.

        Thanks for the reply

For me that is a lot
We have a local 60kph and an 80kph speed zone where the "Pigs" regularly frequent with their hand held money making cameras
So I always use Cruise Control in those areas to avoid accidentally picking up a few kms

OK, went to Bunnings and they only had "Scotch" brand + some others I haven't heard of - no 3M
Spent an awfully long time going through all the types/brands etc
The best Scotch branded tape was about 1/2 kilo per metre
A "Perma" brand "Mounting" tape had a capacity of 20kg per metre but was a bit dearer - that's what I ran with - It's clear as well
Like chalk and cheese compared to the original tape.

Unfortunatley it was 20mm wide and I had to cut it in half width wise - took a bit but got there
Anything it touched it stuck to.
Covered pretty well all the underside of the foot rest
Didn't have any acetone so I used iso propyl alcohol to clean the plastic
Carefully positioned and pressed on - instant adhesion -
Don't think you could get it off if you wanted too !!! And that's with less than 50% of the bond strength

Just shows what garbage tape they use in the first place
Thanks again for the "heads up"

Sounds about right. Especially if it was from eBay.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

A lot of Scotch brand is actually 3M if you look carefully at the packaging

I bought this in Walmart in the USA but is available at Bunnings. Is identical to the 3M stuff I bought off 3M themselves
