Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Max kPa boost

    Hi guys,

What is the expected value for max boost that the engine should do.

    kPa or psi please. Thanks.

This is for a stock engine.

Pretty sure standard is 1.2 bar (17.4 psi).

It might not be exactly 17.4, but it's definitely not 37!

The standard Turbo isn't going to push anywhere near 37psi. I'd suggest probably issues with the OBD software on the Andriod side, if it was a faulty sensor or something on the car side, you'd almost certainly be getting overboost warnings all the time.

I have an engine warning light along with engine too lean code. VW have looked at it 4 times and it keeps coming back on.

              Max kPa boost

As mentioned avove - stock psi on the turbo is around 18psi or thereabouts. Your app is very wrong....unless you have a boost leak or something. Is the car 100% stock, or do you have an intake fitted? Certain intakes can cause issues.

Nothing done to the car. I had non stock rims on it but that's about it. Even those were taken off after a month or so. All stock. I will try another app to see if it has different reading. Not sure what apps to try.

And this is for the Scirocco R. It should be the same as Golf R?

Should be the same. Are you still having all those other issues with this car?

Out of interest, have you ever contacted VWA about all these issues? They usually get right up the dealers if you've got ongoing unresolved problems.

If you want to accurately log what the car thinks the boost is, then invest in VCDS and a cable from Ross-tech. Or check out this thread and contact a member who's near you to lend a hand in exchange for a 6-pack.

In addition to actual and requested boost pressure, you may also need to log atmospheric pressure in order to determine the actual boost. You should also log lambda values, MAF etc. If this is all sounding like too much work, there are many excellent specialists in Sydney who are more than capable of having a good look at your car in an attempt to diagnose issues. One such specialist is parso_rex.

If your car is throwing 'too lean' codes I would be very nervous, and get things looked at ASAP - irrespective of how much your dealer is dragging their feet. A lean engine could be detonating or worse.

Your OBD11 Android app will be reading absolute pressure... ie Boost pressure + Atmospheric pressure.
You could normally use 101.9kPa (14.5 psi) as a "standard" figure for Atmospheric pressure depending on where you are of course...
The more altitude you have the lower the pressure..
You also need to determine if your app is reading requested boost or actual boost... and remember... the cheap app (relatively speaking) is not going to be anywhere near as accurate as a VCDS log of your car while it is being driven...
The VCDS log can give much more valuable info...

^ good point. I remember something like this has come up before. Same with VCDS logs, you need to subtract the atmospheric pressure in order to get "real" boost.

Ive never actually used one of these OBD apps for smartphones, so basically boost is useless in real time because you cant figure it out without a calculator.
