Was nice and sunny last week so managed to borrow a mates trade plate and take the old girl out for a bit of a cruise to St Kilda.
She is really running awesomely! The standard Zenith carby really behaves well after the rebuild. Just a little grumpy when on choke but starts first crank.
Unfortunately it looks as though an earthing problem we were working on a couple weeks ago has managed to fry the speedo return spring so ill have to source another speedo before the next roadworthy inspection. Gotta love old cars. Always something to fix
It always starts with a small touch up and then ends up being something bigger.
The paint had cracked around the windscreen wiper mounting hole so I figured id rub it back a bit and seal it so it doesnt rust through. It appears the paint had started cracking because the metal had started to develop some stress cracks.
Unsure how to tackle it just yet but might look at getting the TIG welder on it and seeing if we can fuse it back together as the cracks are very fine.
VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

Hey Tim, looks like it turning to be an interesting project. If only I had plenty of time to blow then I'd definately lend a hand. Still kinda wish I was given the green light to get myself a nice project in the form of the mkII gti. *Sigh* The old yellow girl looks like its going along nicely mate. Keep up the great work. I'll see you tomorrow night.
Well with a little bit of patience I managed to sort out the cracks. I think my welding is getting a little better. A pic of the finished product.
No filler was used due to the nature of this area it would just end up cracking anyways. The paint is a reasonable match (not perfect) although its just temporary until the car gets a full respray some time in the future. The cracks seem to have been caused by the rivets in the wiper mechanism sheering off and subsequently putting more stress on the area. I made sure to rectify that issue before putting it all back together.
Onto the next challenge. Replacing the strut mounts. I know it all looks pretty when you have the caps on but this doesnt really make life easy when you need to undo the bolts!
Anyways I replaced the mounts today with later model units which should be a bit more robust so the only things left to get her roadworthy will be to replace the speedo and the wiper blades. Lets hope that when I get the old girl inspected again they dont find new things for me to fix!
Finished replacing the speedo the other day (thanks for the donation stu!). Took her for a test spin and it works fine which was a relief!
One other thing that had been bothering me was the crusty Philips stereo that was just slapped into the dash. A good friend of mine come across this old school AM Blaupunkt radio in his travels and instantly thought of me. A few slight modifications to the facia plate that come with it and the install has come up quite nice I thought. I wasnt too fused if it didnt work but turns out they still broadcast AM radio!
