Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Occasional Highway Driving

Hi There. I'm looking into a new (used) car for my wife, and just starting my research. The VW up! looks like a nice little package that might suit her town needs, but I'm wondering if any owners could let me know how it goes with occasional highway driving. We live in the country, and she drives to Canberra (230km round trip) at least once every two weeks, and to Sydney (800km round trip) about twice a year. She currently drives an early model Hyundai i30 CRD. The alternative to the up! is a used Polo 6R TDI manual, which would be much more like her current car. Cheers.

If you are happy with the one you have, yes Services would be cheaper for a start I would think. Oil certainly would be TDI oil is $90 for 5L. Our TSI Polo services averaged just over $350 a time without oil which I supply.

UP's are gone now so should be cheap as. Wouldnt like to go 500k in one I dont think

The Up is certainly capable of the journey but in my opinion, a larger car might be a safer car to use. better to get a 90tsi at least

No car bought yet, as buying a new car for my wife is always a long, drawn out process. Thanks for all the input, although it has not provided a definitive direction.

I did a trip from Lane Cove to Casino (northern NSW) via Byron Bay in my Up!, with loud exhaust and lowering springs. Not the MOST comfortable trip I've done, but its still a Volkswagen and as such handled the trip fantastically.

Fun fact, I filled up at Casino, drove halfway to Lismore, turned around and took the back country roads to Grafton, then down the highway and back to Lane Cove. It did that whole 750km trip home on one tank of fuel! 35L!

I own an Up! five door; a VW Golf wagon diesel, and a brand new Passat Comfortline with R pack. I use the Up! as my 'fun', city and work car; I've driven it all over NSW (based in Sydney) and even to the WRC at Coffs Harbour (it's good on gravel roads too!).

An under rated car by those who don't drive them, it's uncomplicated, goes like a cut snake ( OK it's 1.0l and 3-cylinders - but it lacks nothing) and I've never felt unsafe in it at all... Given it has GPS, a good sound system and bluetooth, it's also well equipped. The only options I have are the VW alloy 16 inch upsilon wheels and the PID centre.. Highly recommended and a lot of fun!

PS: It averaged 5.5l per 100kms on the open road at full highway speeds (110km/h average - no problem!)
