195/45/16 is a bit big for a Mk1. You really need a 195/40 to avoid rubbing. I wouldn't touch Falken either - in fact, I wouldn't piss on them! I had them on my Cupra for a while and they were utter rubbish.
Get Contisport Contact2s in a 195/40/R16. You get what you pay for with tyres and they are the most important part of the car, being the final contact point with the road. They also stretch beautifully, despite having solid sidewalls. Good grooves for wet weather too
