Tirerack experiences?

They are 2 different tyres. Different TWI, different tread philosophy, etc. Pick the one most suited to your uses & the bulk of your driving.carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

Generally, all-season tyres tend to be more compliant, less noisier and wear more slowly, while summer tyres tend to have better grip, handling and response in the dry & wet.Originally posted by yowie View PostI understand the name and coding, thanks also to Tobes, but am just wondering, given the price is ballpark identical, whether there is a noticeable difference?
The only snow for us is the odd day in the New England or when we go skiing.
I am guessing that as dry grip seems very good, that they won't wear as well in warmer Brisvegas, but I dont know.
What do the experts in here say?
Also note that, unlike winter tyres with a snowflake marking, snow performance/traction in all-season tyres is not uniform and varies widely from tyre to tyre.
In Australia, I find it very difficult to justify the use of all-season tyres based on the need for snow traction alone, but one might buy them for their other characteristics, which I mentioned above.
However, Continental tyres are known for their soft sidewalls, so I think most people would be satisfied with the DW anyway.

Thanks diesel_vert and brad, that is starting to make sense.
Quiet and longevity with 'reasonable' grip were the priorities.
In Golf terms, and also based on my recent driving, reasonable grip for everyday is fantastic compared to most makes.
So it looks like I lucked the combo I was after, which was based on trawling through the Tirerack surveys, so maybe not that wild a guess.MY09 Golf Candy White 2.0 TDI Pacific

Many manufacturers impose conditions on export of goods. (Look at Amazon to see what sorts of things aren't available for export.) So that's where the package forwarders come on. You can get a US address and then ship them to yourself in Australia (all done by the package forwarder). For example, Amex has a deal with MyUS.com - waives annual fee and offers discount off shipping. As long as the shop can cope with approving a method of payment, a package forwarder works well. I have got a lot of stuff from the USA, a lot of which is simply unavailable in Australia or priced exorbitantly. Eg Gates Krikit belt tension gauges for V and mulit-V belts cost about US$12, if you can get them in Australia, I have been quoted $85 each.Originally posted by yowie View PostThis doesn't make much sense. What is the new 'requirement' they speak of? And who has legal authority to impose such a thing?
It sounds and looks like re-seller pressure on manufacturers to maintain profits, which, if proved, would be collusion to overcome the objects of the US -Australia Free Trade Agreement.
I am very happy with my Conti DWs and with the price.
I couldn't be bothered complaining to ACCC by calling 1300 302502. Others may.
When needed, we will just engage a third-party purchaser.

Just got a quote from tirerack for 4x 245/45R19 tyres and shipping ended up killing the deal. Added over $100 a tyre ($425 for freight).

generally its about $350 to ship 235/35/19 (x4) tyres to sydney. even with that freight, its still way better than locally. so an extra $75 shouldnt be a deal breaker. what tyres?Originally posted by tigger73 View PostJust got a quote from tirerack for 4x 245/45R19 tyres and shipping ended up killing the deal. St George were offering free freight within Australia which made it pretty attractive. Just looking for a good deal on reasonable tyres.Originally posted by walbjj View Postgenerally its about $350 to ship 235/35/19 (x4) tyres to sydney. even with that freight, its still way better than locally. so an extra $75 shouldnt be a deal breaker. what tyres?
$200 a corner for KU31's (a little worried about the noise) or Pirelli Pzero Nero for $219 from SG.
Tire rack were a little cheaper but adding in freight to Adelaide blew the price out.

ok, basically i got the goodyear assym 2 delivered for about $1100 all up. the pirelli pzero for $219 seems good, but there is a lot of variants of the pzero, some are a lot better than others. but at $880 for a set, seems reasonable for a known brand.Originally posted by tigger73 View PostSt George were offering free freight within Australia which made it pretty attractive. just check on the age of the tires they offer..St George were offering free freight within Australia which made it pretty attractive. Just looking for a good deal on reasonable tyres.
I found the Falken ZE912 to be quite reasonable tires, just finished a set, they lasted 30,000k, just got a set
of Conti CSC 3 (225/40 x 18 ) fitted for $1,080, good wet weather and yes the sidewalls a little softer than the Falkens.Last edited by mfl; 02-03-2013, 07:42 AM.mk VI GTI, manual, reflex silver, basic

Anyone brought from these guys?
Alloy Wheels - AlloyWheels.COM | Buy Alloy Wheels
Not sure how there tyre prices fair compared to tirerack, but they will sell OZ racing wheels (unlike tirerack) at a good price.
The set I'm after is £890 posted (£640 wheels and £250 postage) but there going to put a total of £890 on the invoice so I'm a bit worried ill get slapped with taxes.

worst case scenario is u will have to pay customs, but on that amount, it will only be on the $200 or so that is over $1000. (the converted amount is about $1290 or something) so it wont be a whole lot
alternatively, email them and see if they can change the pound sign to a dollar sign2011 cw golf gti 3dr man-tint-rear cargo mat-weathershields-bluetooth-mdi-19" oz racing ultra leggera-mcgard lockbolts-boston acoustic pro60se-jl audio xd700/5-jl audio bass tube bb-w060p- titanium exhaust tips-eibach custom pro-kit-OPS-OSIR cf mirror covers and cf front lip-dieselgeek short shifter

An old thread.
Has anyone actually purchased Michelin Pilot Super Sport (225/45R17) and stuck them on their GTI? - What was your end price. If allowed to ship to oz, they are $620 something for 4 plus shipping (which I'm assuming i around $300-$400.)
THey work well? Mine came form factory with Dunlop Maxx RT which I've been ok with, tends to understeer which feels like side wall movement to me. I know the PSS has a stiffer sidewall.
Also is anyone aware of any legal issues of running these tyres? I.e insurance being denied as a tyre not sold in australia were being used. (sure PSS re available here in Australia but only R18/R19 configurations) Not looking for opinions, looking for facts on this one.
Cheers

Check the load and speed ratings. If you fit tyres with lower load /speed rating than is specified for your car this will effect your insurance.

As long as the load and speed ratings are correct you should not have an issue.
I had a tirerack quote late last year for US$330.00 for PSS in 245 and 275 x 19. I would expect that the 17" tyres would be no more than $300.00. Current exchange are going to hurt and total will be well over A$1,000.00. Splitting your order will likely cost you about US $200.00 for 2 tyres.
Tireack shipping was very quick and efficent.
No idea how the PSS perform on a GTi. Brilliant on a C63.

Australian vehicle standards stipulate that passenger car tyres must comply with the requirements of ADR 23.Originally posted by minke View PostAlso is anyone aware of any legal issues of running these tyres?
ADR 23 also states that UNECE Regulation No. 30 is deemed equivalent to the technical requirements of ADR 23.
Thus, the easiest way of determining if a tyre complies with UNECE R30 (and hence ADR 23) is to check if it has an E-mark on the sidewall.
ADR 23 also states that passenger car tyres must have a marking on one sidewall indicating the week and year of manufacture.
There is nothing in the regulations that deals with a tyre's market availability or place of origin or manufacture.Originally posted by minke View PostI.e insurance being denied as a tyre not sold in australia were being used.
If a tyre complies with the requirements of ADR 23 (as per above), then it can used on the public highway.

- be rated for a speed of at least 180 km/h; and
