  • Tirerack.com why would buy anywhere else?

Just got my tyres from the tirerack.com. Incredible. I ordered them on 22/12 and they came today! Thats one week from the US. No customs, no duty just delivered to my door by fed ex. And at 60% of the cost I could get them from here including freight! I went for Bridgestone RE050a's 2254018 RY.

Can't wait to get 'em on!

How much exactly were they, and what was the best price you found in Aus?

Fantastic, didn't know importing tyres privately can be so rewarding! Might have to give this a go some day. I was always put off by the idea of it cos of shipping costs. If it's OK, could you post up the shipping cost? I always thought that with something of that size (4 x 18" tyres), it'd cost at least half the price you're getting the tyres for...

It should be said, that it is not always so straight forward and some times you will be asked to pay import duty. To say it can't happen is out of the question, so you always have to bear this in mind.

On to these tyres though, what made you choose them?

I was quoted $540 per corner from Bridgestone- I'm sure I could have got them cheaper some where else but not for............US$208ea plus US$300 shipping!

              Do the math 4 x $540 = $2160

              versus 4 x $231(US.90c/AUS$1) = $924 + $333 shipping = AUS$1257

1257/2160 = 58% Even if they had charged me duty, I would still be better off!

And the stupid thing is, bridgestone told me they didnt know how long it would take to get the tyres in as they were " a liitle different"! WTF! It took 7days from the US to my freakin door!

The reason I got the re050a's...I have run them on my heavily modified 3rb liberty and also on my honda accord euro before that. I found them to be a fantastic handling tyre, quiet and lasted 40,000km (on the lib anyway).

              Getting them fitted tommorrow morning!

                  Email or phone them directly.

In my experience with buying wheels a while back they were a bit fiddly in handling the payment, but apart from that no problems. I did get hit with customs/duty, too.

Got my Bridgestone’s fitted yesterday. They look more aggresive than the conti sport2's. Will take a couple of hundred k's to fully test them. Interesting, the place that fitted the tyres for me were very interested in where I got them from. After I told them how much I paid they decided to try and order them direct from the tirerack as they are cheaper than they can buy them at cost price from the OZ distributors. We are definitely getting screwed here.

yeah i'm planning to get some F1 Asymmetrical's from tirerack in the next month or two, hopefully the dollar stays good or goes up. May order two at a time to make sure it gets under the customs radar, but people ordering 17" would be able to get 4 at a time no probs.

Not much incentive to get tyres locally, my last ones were $450 each!

John, I'm hoping that as more and more people become internet-savvy, then local retailers will have to rethink their business/pricing or they are going to go bust

I must say, that is a fantastic saving you've made. Good show wot.

Although it does seems we get royally shafted here, and if it's not tyres it's suspension (or sporting or electrical goods). I went looking for some winter riding gear in the middle of a stifling Brisbane Summer in the hope of finding a few out-of-season specials. I was surprised to find the same items online for 1/3 of the price (including delivery) the local shops wanted. And local bike shops wonder why I buy less and less from them...

Good point Gareth, as regardless of what we pay here, the fitters admitting these tyres were cheaper than their AU cost price (!!) means Australian business models regarding importing and distribution really need big a re-think, as all they seem to do is force people to look elsewhere for value.

I know where I'll be buying my next set of 18"s...

Although every case is going to be different I have some sympathy for Australian retailers it's always going to be a hard (and sad) balancing act.

On your average purchase of under $1,000 worth of gear your not paying customs duties, which your Australian supplier would be since they order in bulk. I will concede that they should be able to get a further 10% discount since they would most likely have a "dealer" account and order regularly. The big cost however comes in having to have ALL the different parts on a shelf waiting for a customer to walk in and want one as well as shipping costs.

To run some numbers, the last couple of orders I have done with GAP cost me an additional 21%+ just on shipping, lets be nice and give the Australian guy a 10% profit margin and your price looks something like this when you start with the 60% of the AUD price your paying:

                              60% * 1.21 * 1.10 = 79.86%

Now that's before you factor in warehousing or other overheads.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to justify high prices and yes there may very well be lotsof other factors... like I said every case will be a bit different, but you can quickly see how Australian prices can be higher.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
