Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Michelin Pilot Sport..which one ?

Hi ...what is the difference (if any) between PS4's and PS5's. PS5 are a bit less expensive. Is the extra worth it over Hankook Ventus Evo 3 ( Lucas I know you are a fan). $150 less on the size I am looking at for my rear wheel drive BMW. (ps 7.5 Golf GTI is my other car).

I have PS4's on my Golf R and Boxster. Haven't tried the 5's but the 4's are my go-to tyre these days.

Depends what you're after - a decent 'all-round' tyre that will serve you well and get good km life while returning decent ride quality and tolerable noise, or the tyre with the best grip.

Having driven on the 4 and 5 pretty much back to back - honestly, there doesn't feel to be a lot in it. The 5 do seem to be reporting better wear rates, but would hope they are a step-up on the 4 - the 4 is a superseded tyre.

The Hankooks are noisy and harsh riding in my experience. They don't have the grip payoff to justify it. Unlike say the Bridgestone Potenza Sport which is noiser than the PS4, and marginally harsher riding, but has grip than neither the PS4 or the PS5 can match (they are in the same league as PS4S). Being a Bridgestone though, they will likely wear fast and probably done and dusted in 30k km.

[I][B]Thanks Doc, "looking for decent 'all-round' tyre that will serve you well and get good km life while returning decent ride quality and tolerable noise", as you stated so PS5's it is. $417 each for the size I need.

Pilot Sport 5 is just the newer version of the Pilot Sport 4. Both are excellent tyres.

Not to be confused with the Pilot Sport 4S which is a higher performance tyre and different to the normal Pilot Sport 4 and 5.

SO Bridgestone have the POTENZA SPORT on the 4 for 3 deal this month. Any thoughts on those, the cost makes them worth considering.

Yes the Bridgestone Potenza Sport are definitely worth considering if the price is right - they have been developed to compete with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and 5 and are also a very good tyre.

No that is not correct - the Potenza Sport was designed to compete with the Pilot Sport 4S, Continental Contisport Contact 7, Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport etc.

The PS 4 and 5 are a class "below" in performance, but have a marginally better ride and likely offer a better life in km.

As long as you get what you want, that's all that matters

I reckon most of us would have a hard time picking between many of the modern performance tyres - so many of them are just so good.

the side walls seem pretty prone to damage if you clip the kerb when getting into a driveway.

I recently discovered this - not sure if I need to get this fixed. This is the worst of them but there are other smaller ones on the other tyres (might be from deeper potholes too). Have had these less than a year.

That appears to be just a bit of damage to the "rim protector" portion of the tyre, where they put a bit of extra thickness to try and give a small amount of protection the rim if you rub against the gutter.

I would just glue the flappy bit of rubber back down with a bit of superglue so that it doesnt look ugly.
