  • Newbie Bluetooth stuff

Here is a question I posted yesterday in Newbie posts. I am moving the question to a more specific forum. Hoping this is the right thing to do.

    I have a 2009 Tiguan TDI 2.0 with a replaced RCD510 and a 5K0035730D Bluetooth unit.

The main issue relates to accessing SMS as they come through. I don't get an audio message everytime; when I do, the radio switches off, but the volume on the "you have received a message from X" is usually low; when asked to "read it", I can't get a response from the unit. (The microphone works fine for the phone in general.)

Nor can I generate a voice tag to use to call.

The star button does not appear to do anything.

But the phone book is good and keeps updating. The radio works well with 2 channels. The CD player is good. I can play music from my Windowsphone with some tweaking.

Am not sure how to progress from here. Is there some kind of firmware upgrade that will help?

    Thanks for any advice

Does your Tiguan have a white or red MFD, and is your steering wheel the older MkV or newer Mk6? 2009 to 2011 was a transition period, so it would be helpful to know exactly what the head unit and Bluetooth module is working with.

      Thanks, Arcadelt
      The MFD is white.
The steering wheel is a MkV as far as I can work out from the on line pics

I should also have asked what type of phone you have.

I have a similar setup to you in a 2010 Tiguan. My Bluetooth module is the 9w7. Carsystems indicate your part number is the successor to that module, but I'm not sure what the difference is. Anyway, I use an iPhone and the volume of the SMS is governed by the phone and the messages are read by Siri, not the head unit or Bluetooth module. Unless your module has a SIM in it, I'm not sure why you indicate that the unit doesn't respond, as I would have expected your phone to be responding. Perhaps we can talk it through a bit more to understand what is going on.

          Thanks

I am using a WindowsPhone Microsoft Lumia 640, which nomally sits in my short pocket while I am driving, unless I am using the Map/GPS function.

I had thought that it was the RCD Unit responding to the arriving SMS, but I can check out if a message also comes up on the screen of the phone, being read by the Siri-equivalent, Cortana. There is certainly no SIM in the Unit. But the Unit switches to the BT Media screen when the SMS arrives. But it does not happen every time! And when I answer, using the car microphone, as I thought, there is no response. I will do a bit more homework and see what comes up on the phone. I will also try increasing the BT read-out volume.

          More to follow tomorrow

          Cheers

I have an RNS-510, which is similar to the RCD-510, but with SatNav. When my iPhone is connected via Bluetooth I can only hear message and e-mail notifications when listening to Media. If I am listening to the Radio or a CD there is no notification sound, although I can see the notification on the screen of the iPhone. However, when I activate Siri to give instructions, like asking her to read messages, the head unit sees this as a phone call and suspends all music or the radio and switches to the phone screen. At no point does my phone ever cause the activation of the Media screen.

              Hello again
There is nothing on the phone screen apart from the message in the appropriate inbox, when a sms arrives.
The headunit again switched from radio (FM) to BT-Audio screen on one occasion, and I heard a message, saying "Message from xxx", but did not read it or offer, on this occasion, to read it. A second time, no audio message at all, and did not switch to BT-Audio screen.
I tried deleting the BT connection from both the phone and the head unit and reinstalling, but did not help.
              It is very puzzling!
I suspect it is the head-unit or BT module at fault, because the connection in my other car to an AXIS Head-unit works fine, reads messages when asked, replies when asked, etc.
              Thoughts?

I suspect you are right. The technology in the RNS/RCD head units is a bit old now, and I suspect the Bluetooth modules too. Windows Phone is not the most widely used, but I can't imagine Microsoft have gone off the reservation with their implementation, so that leaves your car's setup. All I can say is that mine works exceptionally well, but I have an RNS instead of RCD, I have a 9w7 instead of your newer BT module and I use an iPhone.

Surprised I am the only one trying to help out here. There are some better informed than me, like @kamold, that might be able to chime in.

                  Appreciated!
Let's see if others have ideas. Do we assume kmold will be reading this? (I am new to sites like this!)

No, but mentioning him with an "@" means he will be altered if he uses Tapatalk. Luck of the draw I'm afraid.

Unfortunately I have neither an RCD nor a Windows phone so I can't offer much of anything...

Best advice I can offer is to:
                      1. try whatever you are trying to achieve with an Android or Apple handset and report
                      2. Check the coding and adaptation of the RCD and BT module with VCDS to see if there is anything that looks obviously misconfigured.

                        Hi,

I have an 2015 Tiguan with RCD-510 and don't think it has that capability at all. Have read about RNS-315 & 510 yes but not RCD models. I had a look online some time ago searching for that option but nothing from what I could find. Some people online might have confused the RCD with RNS models.
