Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MIB UI RCD510 in Mk5 Golf

    Hi there,

I'm seeing a bunch of these MIB RCD510 VW headunits for sale on various auction sites:

VW Car Bluetooth Radio New High Version MIB for GOLF 6 JETTA 6 POLO 6R | eBay

Some, but not all, list them as compatible for Mk5 Golfs. I currently have a RCD 310, and I was going to replace it with a RCD 510, but these MIB units seem to make more sense considering they have integrated Bluetooth (my vehicle doesn't have Bluetooth at the moment).

However, I need to know with these are just plug and play, or do they need any VCDS coding? My vehicle does have the correct CANBUS revision to avoid the battery drain issue, but before I head down this route, I want to make sure this unit is compatible. I can't seem to find any information on these units being retrofitted into Mk5 Golfs.

    Regards,

    Mike

I don't have any direct experience with these units.

But on the face of it these should fit any PQ platform car.
It would be a cost effective basic upgrade from an RCD310 with integrated bluetooth.
Looks like it supports composite video cameras rather than RGBS, so you could use cheap aftermarket reverse cameras.

I'd imagine it should largely work out of the box, but it may require some coding to get all ancillary functions to work eg OPS (parking sensor) integration, reverse camera, steering wheel controls etc.

Be sure to get back to the forum with some more information should you go down this route.

    From another ebay seller:
The radio is fit for the VW Cars of PQ28/PQ35 Platform.
Full touch-screen system with CD changer, MP3 CD reader.
The radio is without DAB, RDS and SAT Systems.
The radio supports maximal 32G HCSD.
The radio supports Reversing View Camera.
The USB can read USB-stick, and it can connect with Iphone/Ipod.
    AUX IN.
The radio supports Bluetooth. With it you can steam the music from your phone kits, make phone call through the touchscreen or multifunctional steeringwheel.
    Radio FM: 87.5-108.0MHz (step0.1MHz) AM: 531-1600K (step9k,531,540,549…)
    4X50W output

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it seems a cost effective alternative to the usual RCD510 and a Bluetooth unit. At least with the MIB, the Bluetooth and USB is all combined. There isn't even any need to fit the microphone for the hands free, as it is part of the unit.

My vehicle doesn't current have the reversing camera, or Bluetooth at all. I doubt I would fit a reversing camera.

I've sent a message to a local seller here in New Zealand, to confirm Mk5 compatibility, and installation requirements. If I do go ahead with this, I'll be sure to post up my experience in installing it.

To be honest, I'm not that familiar with the installation/retrofitting of these units, but I'm sure I'll learn a bunch

Just follow any one of the countless RNS/RCD install guides for a Mk5 and the procedure will be very much the same, at least as far as the physical installation is concerned (eg trim removal etc)

Ok, I have finally bit the bullet and purchased one of these units. I ordered the RCD330G Plus, which is the larger touch screen version with no CD player (lets face it, CD's are so nineties... )

Anyway, once I receive this, I will be updating with my experience. From what I have read, it should be a straight swap with my RCD310, and since I currently don't have Bluetooth, this new unit will be a plus, as it has full Bluetooth integrated in the unit.

One thing. Does anyone have access to a manual for the RCD330G Plus?

I do have one question. The RCD330 has a single antennae plug, whereas I believe the RCD310 has two. I assume therefore, that I have to purchase an adapter. Which is the correct adapter to purchase? I'm keen to get everything I need before the unit arrives

Ebay ad says it comes with an antenna adapter.
There aren't any pics of the rear of the unit so can't tell if its a fakra or ISO plug.
              I'd ask the seller...

I didn't purchase the model above, I purchased the RCD330G Plus, which doesn't have a CD player. It has USB, and SD (plus Bluetooth), but does have a bigger screen. This model doesn't come with an adapter.

I've put up photos in my other post

OK so you need a dual to single fakra adapter:

                    Thanks All ordered

I'll update this thread once I receive the unit, the adapter, and get it installed. Hopefully there will be no problems.

Well, the unit arrived today. 4 days shipping from China to NZ, which is pretty good. The unit was packed well, and looks great.

I'm just waiting on the antenna adapter and some trim removal tools, and I should be all set to install it later this week, or on the weekend

Ok, I got the unit fitted. It proved to be a bit difficult to remove the trim, but I got there in the end.

The unit functions great, and the audio/Bluetooth functions perfect.

The only problem (and it is a minor one), is the when I put it in reverse, the screen switches to the RVC mode, and says "Look, is it safe to move?" and then switches to "Reverse Camera not fitted" or something like this. It only does it once after the car is turned on and reverse is used. Does anyone know if this is possible to be switch off?

There might be some sort of way to disable RVC mode through VCDS?

There is some coding to change. May not yet be documented in vcds as sellers I've seen are showing raw bytes to change.
