  • RNS510 Firmware update caused battery drain. Suggestions?

    Hi folks!

I need some help, here is my little drama.

I have a 2005 VW Golf GTI with an RNS510. The HDD of the unit failed some months ago, so I this week I finally decided to replace it. Following the guide from this forum, I replaced the disk by a new SSD and installed the 5238 firmware version. I also installed the western europe V13 maps. Everything went like a charm...... until today.

I am suffering the battery drain issue, and I really don't know what to do now. I think I basically have two options:
    1. Update my CAN interface
    2. Downgrade to a previous firmware version

Although I would in princple go for option two, I would appreciate your help, since I am not sure what should I do. Honestly, I am not very interested on having the very latest firmware version. I just want a navigation unit that works and has updated maps.

As far as I understand, updating the CAN interface requires to buy a VCDS and obviously, a new CAN interface. If you suggest to do this, which models do you recommend to buy, and which sellers are recommended? (BTW, I live in Spain, so maybe worldwide delivery would be nice)

If you recommend me to just downgrade the firmware, which version should I go for? And something very important, how can I know the HW version of the RNS510? If I keep the SETUP button pressed during 20secs, it says HW-Version H74, but I'm not sure what this means.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Yes you need a new CANBUS gateway, or go back to the firmware version you were on.
If you want to downgrade, you need to go into the hidden setup menu and then go to system and allow firmware downgrade.

If you want to upgrade your CANBUS gateway then get one that the seller will code for you before shipping like this one:

Many thanks, I will first try downgrading to version 1100, let's see if I can fix it this way. If not, I'll change the Canbus gateway.

Gateway upgrade is very easy. And new software is much better on the rns. I would upgrade when you can.

          My first post so hello!

I've been experiencing the same issue for the past year and have been through 3 batteries while upgrading and downgrading to almost every firmware. Yesterday I bit the bullet and downgraded back to 1100, but I don't know yet whether this has done the trick.

However... as nothing is ever simple, the splash screen has now decided to be a fuzzy, scrambled screen instead, so I may have to upgrade again if I can't find another version of 1100.

So, I'm now quite interested in the CAN Bus Gateway upgrade (which I've tried to avoid), because I may have no other option. I've tried searching on eBay, but I can't seem to find anyone selling a coded Gateway for a 2011 Passat CC.

          Anyone have any ideas?

          Thanks.

You won't need a new canbus gateway in a 2011. You have some other issue that is draining the battery. Best visit an auto Electrician.

Yes, that's what I've been thinking, especially as I've downgraded my firmware now. I think it may have always had the issue (since I bought it 15 months ago) and I've blamed it on the firmware upgrade I did.

              Thanks for your help!

                Hi again,

I finally did what everybody suggested, I changed and re-coded my CANbus gateway.

Now, I am getting two errors in the drivers display, which say that the left reverse light and the rear-right anti-fog pilot are not working. My car does not have those pilots, but just a reverse light in the right and an anti-fog pilot in the left. In the coding of the canbus gateway, I unchecked the "right-hand side" checkbox (it was checked when I received the gateway), but the error messages remains in the display. Any advice?

Apart from that, the configuration of the navigation module is set to 0000000000. I find this strange, it looks like it is not initialized. The coding was the same (000000...) with the old gateway, but this time I suspect that the battery is draining out, since the car does not startup seamlessly. It might just be that the battery is half-empty due to the installation of the new firmware of the RNS510 and the new maps, but I am afraid that the car wont startup tomorrow... Any suggestion?

                Thanks.

                  Charge the battery.
                  Code the rns correctly.
Clear faults from the central electrics module.

For anyone else who may have a similar problem, could you please explain exactly what you did to fix up the remaining faults?
