Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • No version info displayed on my RNS 510 ?

    Hi,

I have a 2010 CC & I had the maps updated earlier this year to v7 by the local VW dealer, charged me $50 but gave no disc. 1st question, does that mean my SW version would also be upgraded? I tend to believe it doesn't so I jumped into Set Up as per instructions here but it only displays AM & FM, no other info? can someone please advise a newbie

    cheers

No it doesnt two separate actions It is probably a C version unit but should still have AM FM and a line with version information Press that and all will be revealed SW could quite likely be 2760?? which my 2010 had originally.

For $55 the dealer could have sold you the disc for you to do it your self so you got ripped off

Then I must be doing something wrong? I switch on the unit wait til it boots up then I hold the Set Up button in until I see the AM & FM lines, but there is definitely no other line of info there. Thx for the tip on the disc, I'm about to get the v8 update so I'll be sure to grab the disc this time. I have a disc that came with the car when I bought it (2nd hand earlier this year) & that is a v2.

Keep holding the button down, do not take your finger off it. Does it now go to a 3rd screen? Thx for the tip on the disc, I'm about to get the v8 update so I'll be sure to grab the disc this time. The C unit on original firmware didnt always go to the secret menu. Mine didnt until i went to 3980 or whatever It should have version info on that screen once it shows.

An update to 5238 should fix it as Kamolds thread says ALL units with an HDD can load that without problems

Go here and follow the FIRMWARE 523X "LINK" All done at your risk of course and you need a map disk as you will lose the map as it repartitions the HDD

Tried again, held that set up button for at least 60 secs, but its the same deal, it only shows FM & AM, there is absolutely no other info on the screen ???? Am I meant to have the head unit in a certain setting when I do this ??? I have tried radio, media, maps, nav, but still the same result ???

Sorry Hillbilly... I didn't read your post before my last post (dumb newbie syndrome), Thanks heaps for this last info, I was starting to think my unit was a Chinese copy
Is my v2 disc sufficient to do the upgrade or do I need to get a v8 disc before I do it?

Well I would wait for Kamold to come on with an opinion but am surprised that line isnt there mine is a 2010 version and it has it and you just have to hold setup in for a short time and the AM FM and vers info appears as a third line.

Seems strange unless it has not been activated somehow Kamold will probably know he is the Guru

Only other thing to do is a hard reset by holding the three buttons across the top of the CD slot all in together and see what happens

Any map will do but a V8 will be best after you have upgraded the firmware

sounds like firmware is pre- FW3810.

Download the link Hillbilly gave you. Burn that .iso image to a CD-r using CDBurnerXP/Nero etc. Use "Track at Once" and lowest burning speed possible.

Then go to the car. LEAVE YOUR KEYS IN YOUR POCKET (don't put them into the ignition).
Turn RNS on. When all modules are running, insert your new firmware disc, watch the fun begin. When the screen prompts ask you to "Proceed to load the firmware" select "OK".

Now don't touch anything until it finishes loading. The unit will advise you when all is complete.

As said before, there will be no maps on your unit now, as the HDD has been re-partitioned to allow maximum music storage. When you're ready, insert the map disc and follow the prompts.

                  Done

Yep but its strange because my C unit had ver 2xxx and it always had that line in it thats how I knew it was a C.

Just a heads up It takes about an hour to do the firmware and about 20 mins to do the map.

As Steve said Dont turn car on it wont do it Guess how I know LOL

I haven't as yet had a chance to attempt my SW upgrade to 5238 as recommended, however I noticed on my-gti.com that a few of the improvements listed here (Volkswagen RNS 510 Firmware Upgrade to version 5238 | my-gti.com), such as Clock Display if RNS510 switched off, Excluded Roads (under route options, Display OPS and RVC at the same time.... are already there on my unit. As I'm the 3rd owner of the car is there a chance that it may already have been upgraded? but if that's the case then why can I not get my SW version info ???

That list of improvements is not current or specific. More a laundry list of changes since the very first release.
You likely have firmware 2760, which does not show version info by default.
Upgrade and you will get that and more.
