Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk 7 Golf R Radio unit Upgrade

    Hi Guys,

Is it possible to upgrade the 5.6in unit to the bigger one that you can get in Europe, costs involved?

Why wasn't it standard of at least give us the option to upgrade, so annoying?

    James

Check this forum section as this question is one which has already been answered. Look about 10 threads down.

Depends whether you're prepared to pay the ransom.

I know, but that is about the speakers/subs etc , I'm talking about the head unit.

James: I have to agree with 2muchcoffeeman, the Pro is pretty pricey for what you get!

If you pursue this option, it's worth remembering that one of VW's selling-points about the mk7 is its enhanced Component Protection protocols. Not sure if you have had the opportunity to read about CP, but the "information Electr. " control module ( which VW calls "J794", but which the rest of us call the discover media/pro unit) is captured within the CP boundaries in the mk7.

CP is sold by VW as their way of combating component theft that ends-up appearing in other vehicles. There may be some truth to this, but IMO CP looks like just another way of providing dealers with more revenue (because only licensed VW agents can fix CP errors). What happens with CP is that the Diagnostic control module (CAN Gateway) looks at a bunch of other control modules every time that "terminal 15" (ignition switch) is energised. What the CAN gateway does is to compare the control modules at ignition switch-on with the control modules at the previous ignition switch-on. If the two lists don't line-up, the CAN bus spits-the-dummy big-time! If a new media unit falls foul of CP, it will work for a short time and then it will cycle the muting function on/off until the CP error is fixed.

So, if you are thinking about getting a Pro, I suggest that you ask the vendor about CP for the unit (especially if the vendor isn't a licensed VW agent). Best case is that it won't be a problem, worst case is that you will need to pay your friendly stealer the cost of fixing a CP error after the new unit installed (at a further cost to you)

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.
