  • Project: Sub box for The_Hawk

Intially in my other post, I wanted to rebuild my box, actually I just wanted to play with some fibre glass again. So opportunity came along, why not help a brethren.

    My progress so far..
These are the 3M tape the Americans abuse! They cost $10 a roll, but they are Blood awesome!!

Honestly, How do you guys like the shape? The request was to have it a bit angled. I am flexible, ATM it in fixed with only few spots of glue. I need this to be perfect !

This is what i did in the rear of my VR.

the only reason is stands out that far is that i used a dual 18mm faceplate and also wanted the full 26ish litres of space for the sub.

sorry i never got a full photo of the boot, or if i did i cannot find the picture.
but i still have the box, in the hope that one day i'll own another VR6.

The total volume of my box was around 25 - 27 Litres, if i did not use the dual front board i would have been able to get an additional 1 - 2 litres of space.

Thats a nice box you have there, Looks TUFF !!!

Today, worked on it a bit more.

Decided to change the structure of it a bit.

Top half done, another layer or so glass on bottom half. Than almost ready to carpet.

How hard is it to do all the fibre glassing? and how do you do it?

It looks like you have a sheet and then you've layed the resin on top?

I've always wanted to have a fiddle with some fibre glass panel/bits and pieces.

You're on the right track Jarred.. BAscially mask up area to fibreglass the base, make the skeleton, strech cotton material over the skeleton, resin than few layers of glassing again.

If you have time create an a/c on http://www.fiberglassforums.com/. It has a large variety of fibre glass work, rangeing from door pods to DIY body kits.

Why didnt you hide the wires?

Can one of these fibe glass sub enclosures be tuned?

The side cover goes over that bit so you won't see it. Otherwise it's just there as a "standard" connector instead of bare wires.

                  Looking good Louis.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Are you going to use fatter speaker wire when its all finished? That stuff doesn't look too solid for carrying bass signals. I always go for decent speaker cable to get the best sound quality.

                        It's all complete.
Here is the run down of the box:

                        The back wall
The wall is layered with 4 coats of 400G choped strand of fibre glass.

                        Skeleton

2 inverted L shaped 18mm ply wood and 12" ring.

                        Base
MDF base with 4 layer for 400G fibreglass.

                        Surface
Cotton material with resin with another 4 layers 400G fibreglass.

                        Stablity
The tight fitting of the fibreglass mould is aready very stable but it is also reinforced with anti slip mats on the base.

                        Terminals
It is secured inplace with silicone and glassed over to prevent air leaks.

                        Volume
                        The bubble test shows ~24-26L.

                        Carpeting
not the best "carpeter" Still needs a little more attention

I would recommend a $30 worth of dynamat / a 12'' subwoofer gasket on mounting point to stop air leads. By doing so the bass will be more solid, Otherwise it sounds great and works fine.

Enjoy Your boot space again Aaron.
