  • RNS510 Battery Drain

Hi guys, I know this may have been covered somewhat but was hoping to get a solution to my battery drain issue with the RNS. I had a mechanic check today and confirmed that it is the unit that is draining power. From what I have read, given I have a 'D' revision unit I need at least a 'K' revision canbus. What I have installed is the following :

    RNS
    1T0033568D

    CANBUS
    1k0907530L

Can anyone (Julian?) tell me what else I need to check to solve this issue? Any coding I may need to do?

    Thanks in advance!
    Rick

If your car is pre 2008 then you will need a new CANBUS to run a RCD or RNS unit and it will need coding to the car.. Best guy to get one from is (VW_PARTS_AUS ) user name on Gumtree or Ebay. Tell him your car details and he will sort you out with a CANBUS unit then you need someone to code it up......VDUB...

...or it can be upgraded (the software in the can gateway) http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...all-75217.html
much easier than replacing it, it's faster and safer.

I charge $80 when done with the service.

Cheers guys, my car is a 2008 and CANBUS version should be fine, what coding is needed? I think it may have been installed but not coded yet perhaps?

If the canbus is original then its coded and you should have no drain issues if 2008 onwards...

As mentioned, you should not get battery drain from your head unit with that CANbus Gateway rev, in theory.
Check the battery draw with the car off for at least 30 mins. Pop the fuse out for the radio, and check the battery draw again. If its dropped off then you may need to check the CANbus, if its the same then you need to hunt down the culprit.

Hi everyone, unfortunately I didn't have time to disconnect the battery and check drain so I removed the radio fuse before going away for 2 weeks and when I returned dead car again. Does anyone have any ideas? The only faults I get from a scan are the following from the Telephone :

you would need to do a current draw test and start disconnecting stuff while watching the draw amount. A normal OK draw amount will be 0.040 amps. Last car I had that drained the battery was a none vw reverse camera ECU that was staying on and draining the car if parked for more than 1 week.......

                    Has it always done this?
If not, when did it start happening.....

and what mods/changes had you made up to that point?

It has done this since I bought it, at 38k the battery had already been replaced by the original owner. All RNS/Bluetooth was installed by VW. I have only installed an AutoPolar FIS which has current software for the red MFD.
