  • Mk5 golf stereo upgrade

    Hey guys ,

I'd like to upgrade my wife's mk5 golfs head unit to something with ipod control and to keep the steering wheel controls functional. What are peoples thoughts on something like an rcd510? As linked below:

    Any help would be fantastic.

    Hey

Yeah that looks good. VW are making parts in China now so it works in cheaper prices for us. It all looks legit to me.

Does the arrow buttons on the steering wheel currently changes tracks/stations? If so then they will still work. If not, then that can't be changed (without major surgery)

What model year is her car? They make the point about the CANBUS battery drain issue. That question also needs to be answered.

05 mk5 golf. Steering wheel controls do station volume etc.

Thanks for your input! Has anyone done something similar to a mk5?

Yatour YT M06 Digital MP3 USB SD AUX interface changer adapter for Volkswagen VW/skoda/seat 2006 2011 12pin quadlock emulator-in Car CD Player from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com

Have this fitted with the optional BT unit in my Mk5 Jetta (connected to my RCD 300). works great..paid about $80-$90 delivered
but you want the ipod controls, so you may want to look at the YT-M07 instead, you also get USB and AUX with it too.
        good cheap alternative

Or if you want more features like navigation, bluetooth have a look at this.

I've been very happy with mine so far.

Can you stream music via the blue tooth unit?
Does it allow you to skip tracks via steering wheel controls if using the usb drive?

That's my favorite option thus far mate.. I don't want anything to look non factory and if that means I can hide that thing some where and use factory controls I'd be interested in trying it.

Anyone else used or heard of this idea?

Thankyou but I don't want to have a non factory head unit.. I have one sitting in my office but don't want to put it in! I like the steering wheel controls.

Actually quansta7 can you please upload a pic of the info on the screen of your rcd300 when you use the usb to play mp3 files so I can see? The factory unit in my wife's golf is also an rcd 300.

Has full steering wheel controls. Not exclusive to oem units.

                      Each to their own.
It looks OEM to anyone who isnt very familiar with the actual oem units. Has VW logos on boot etc, just a lot more features than the RNS510. I have an RNS in my SKoda and put the Android 8 inch unit in my wife's Golf and I am seriously considering swapping them over. Internet access on the head unit is a HUGE advantage (ie live traffic, streaming music services etc etc)

Its certainly a clever concept. For me I just want phone connectivity.. That's it. Gps would be nice but I don't want a million things distracting my wife as she drives and neither does she, we both like the simplicity of the rcd 300 currently. Plus I'm a windows phone user so android makes no sense to us! Great info and I will store it away mentally, maybe, maybe I will look at it for the t5 if it means I can have emails in dash for work etc. We'll see.

you have all steering wheel controls to go up and down tracks and volume as usual on USB mode.
folders are controlled via the disc buttons on the head-unit.
the only thing is that you are limited to 6 folders, and each folder is limited to 99 songs (due to the RCD 300)
you can also definitely stream via bluetooth, and sound quality is great
phone calls via bluetooth is nice and clear
I wired it in and have the unit sitting in the glove box, ran the bluetooth mic to the pillar, with the BT answer/reject button stuck to the right side of the head unit.
i find it a great cheap compromise and works relatively well

the unit connects to the CD changer plug on the back of the RCD300, so when you use it, you press CD for 2 seconds and it flicks over. so the screen shows as per CD changer screen

                            Thanks mate.

After some thought I think I will buy the rcd 510 unit originally posted and go from there.. If worst comes to worst ill just put it in my t5 instead.
