Media in MDI adaptor cable RNS510

I got hold of an Ipod Nano and plugged it in ,on the screen of the ipod there was the VW logo but no sound , I then went to the set up menu and under Media I disabled the AUX, Guess what the Ipod started playing but only in mono the music was ok but the vocals were very low , So I then connected the iPhone and it also played with the AUX disconnected but the same , while it was playing I again went to the set up and clicked to allow the AUX and the music stopped ,Its got me beat ,any one got any thoughts ?

On the Media screen there is a bar along the top with CD AUX HDD SD MDI
I just press the one I want and it swaps from the HDD to the SD card or MDI without problems.

Are you sure you have the correct cable I don't think the white one is the right one The Black one shown early in the thread is identical to the one I had and I played music from my Iphone no trouble at all Had steering wheel controls that I remember.

The one that comes with the car only plays from a USB drive and not from an Ipod or Iphone.

I sold my Iphone and cable so cant check it any more On reading the thread again perhaps you should do this

Take the white cable out of the glovebox and bin it . Get the black Ebay cable and plug the right angled end into the MDI connector.
It goes with the cable to the right as you look at it

Plug the other end into you Iphone or Ipod It should work If it doesn't plug into the glovebox connector then you don't have a MDI socket in there

Post a photo of whats in the glovebox not the iphone end of the cable

This is what I have in my Glove box ,the ipod cable goes directly to the back of the head deck into the media box ,this was the original equipment that came with the RCD310. There is no way I can use the MDI cable

This is what a MDI port looks like in my Glovebox and fits cable from EBAY Probably nothing else works by the look of it

The yellow tag pulls the unit down as it is tucked up behind dash and drops down when glovebox is opened.

That is a factory fitted MDI unit with a RNS510 Don't think anything else works and also has to have the correct cable as already mentioned

I'm wondering if that's a genuine MDI or something different. I've got the same plug as Hillbilly in my Golf although I have only ever used an iPod so can't comment on the iPhone 4S connection.

Most of the time these days I just use Bluetooth for the audio from my phone, maybe look into that instead.

Mind you, if you don't already have bluetooth it's not cheap... but it's one of things I would absolutely get in any car I had ASAP.

Most of the time these days I just use Bluetooth for the audio from my phone, maybe look into that instead.

An Ipod and an Iphone use the same connector as far as I know and whilst that unit is different to mine it ultimately uses the same connector cable, which is the black Ebay one, So that's what you need not an Iphone cable plugged somewhere in the back of the unit

Yep, same 30 pin connector but there isn't anywhere to plug in anything behind the RNS510.
That black cable plugs into the MDI box and comes as a USB socket or 30 pin cable. The USB doesn't support iPod but the 30 pin does.

Yes that's what catches new owners as VW supply the USB one and new owners plug their Apple cord in to the USB and wonder why it doesn't work
They need the $80 from VW or $15 from Ebay with the MDI large connector on it.

I think I read some where that the RCD 310 quadlock plug and the RNS510 quadlock plug were different , the wires were in a different place in the quadlock plug ,I could be wrong ?

Ok I bit the bullet this morning pulled the RNS out swapped the earth wire except it was green not black from number 2 to number 3 and it's working like a bought one The only thing I found is I have to go to set up/. Media and unticK AUX and I can change volume on the steering wheel but not change tracks , but I can on the touch screen. the sound is just as good as playing a CD. There has been a lot of chat about this problem yet the solution was so simple.
