Mounting problems - Mk3 Golf doors

Hey guys

Bought those Kicker splits the other day. I didn't realise until I got home that the speakers are 6" and not 6.5" like I read on the Kicker site (They must make both sizes). So I've now got mounting issues with putting the woofers in the doors.

I tried fab-cutting the gold spacer thingo's that were with the original speakers so that the mounting hole was big enough for the speaker to fit through, but this just won't work because screws are in the way, Kicker screw-holes don't match, blah blah blah. I'm now forced to look for an alternative for mounting these.

Who's used what? Should I be looking for wood or metal or even something else altogether? Is there a better way for me to mount 6" in my doors?

if I were you I would take it back mickey. Save the hassels.

But my old speakers were 6". the Guy before me had a adaptor sitting in the 6.5 hole. it would well, bascially glued it on.

Most 6" speakers will come with an adaptor plate to get them into 6.5" holes. I'd either bail up the place you got them from or head to the local audio place and grab a couple of adaptor (and screws)

This is good. I am therefore NOT crazy, and these do exist for aftermarket speakers. I was thinking of taking advantage of my ****ty school and machining little metal brackets... So if I can't find spacers I'll do this.

Louis I'm not sure they actually stock the 6.5, as I only read it on the Kicker site not the JB site. I'm going to ring them and ask later today. With the 6.5 though, can the stock grilles be put back on or do the speakers fit too tightly into it to allow space for the grille?

I think you better use MDF rather than metal adaptor. Some one please clarify. They sell those for 20..

If you want MDF I have plenty left over from my last project. IF you give me the exact measurement, I will make you one, it will only take 10 mins, just buy me some beer when you come.

I might get back to you on the MDF Louis...I'm just not sure how thick the MDF has to be before the speakers will stick too far out? I would have thought making another metal spacer like the one I have in there atm would work best, but I could be very wrong! I'm about to ring JB.

Try mounting the speakers behind the door trim.
Make an MDF spacer ring and screw the MDF and Speakers directly to the door metal frame behind the trim speaker hole.
From memory there is about 20-25mm gap between the door frame and the trim hole. Plenty for the spacer and speaker to be mounted.
This will also allow you to put back the factory grille as aftermarket grilles might not sit or fit properly in the trim space.
Your speakers will sound better mounted to the door frame as it is more solid than the door trim.

After attempts and fails to make brackets, I'm completely over it and want to buy them. I've rung JB, Strathfield, Supercheap, Autobarn, probably Repco at some stage, and all no luck. The closest was some plastic piece of crap sold by Autobarn for 20 bucks each that i STILL need to cut up for speaker to fit in..


WHERE DO I GET SPACERS???
