  • Swapping out head unit MFD2

    Hi all,

I have an 05' Golf gti currently with an MFD2 navigation head unit, factory blue tooth and 6 CD stacker. I bought an ANS-510 (More info) and swapped out the MFD2, but introduced a batter drain.

I know that when retrofitting an RNS-510 into an older car like mine requires, a newer version CANbus, but the reason I got the ANS instead was so that I wouldn't have to upgrade the CANbus. Several other users with similarly aged cars (found in the link above) have had no issue, which leads me to believe it is not a CANbus related issue.

I was advised that, since I have factory BT installed, not having it connected into the ANS but having it coded into the car would cause a drain. However I've tried disconnecting the module and decoding the BT, but it didn't solve the problem. I've also found in my search for a solution, that retrofitting an RNS requires the removal of the compass module (which I have). Could this be the source of the problem? Does having modules disconnected but still coded actually cause drain issues?

Any advice/guidance or a point in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

If a device is expected as a feature due to coding, but is physically not there, it should just log a fault for an open circuit.

I can't see how a non-existent device can cause the gateway to keep the head unit powered up... I would think that the gateway would still need to be either software updated or replaced with a newer revision.

I don't know this for a fact but it would be my suspicion.

I have an '07 Golf and before I went at the headunit I replaced the CANbus gateway. Not worth the hassle of my wife having a flat battery from my upgrades.

I would unplug the 6 stacker if you haven't already as that could stay powered up. Then you can test the current draw across the battery terminals with the car just turned off, and again after locking the car and waiting at least 30 mins. That should cause the gateway to power off the headunit if it hasn't done so already. If the draw stays high then its likely the gateway leaving something on.

Update your CANbus. If you have an older car and start installing new hardware you'll run into battery drain issues.

        Thanks for the reply guys.

I was told that if the feature is coded but not physically present, the CANbus stays awake polling the connection causing the drain.

The stacked is currently just a loose lead behind the head unit, as I'm not sure how to actually remove the the stacker or if there are any more connections. I'm also not exactly sure where to decode the stacker..

There's no possibility of the compass module causing issues? On the RNS-510 retrofit guides I've read, they have advised removing and decoding the the compass module as the unit will be receiving too many signals. I haven't tried pulling out the module as the videos I've seen show it hiding underneath some serious trim, which I'm not confident at doing myself...

If I update the CANbus, should I just get the latest version? any advice on this?

One more thing I was thinking about though, what happens if the module is decoded but is still physically present. Will this cause any issues?

Remove the compass module from the CANbus gateway in the installation list.
          Same with the CD stacker.
