  • RNS 510/Columbus Map Scale On Startup

This is very much a First World problem that I find mildly annoying. Every time I start the engine and the satnav boots up the map scale is different to when I last switched the engine off, e.g. I park up with the scale on 75m, start the car an hour later and the scale displayed is 150m. Drive to the shops, park up, come back and start up and the scale is out to 300m. Next startup it's 150m again. All over the place. I recently had a satnav antenna problem, and had the dodgy antenna replaced under warranty. I used a puck antenna under the dash until I had the antenna repalced, and wanted to see if the scale would keep changing after I had the new rooftop antenna fitted. It does. I think the issue might have more to do with a FW update to 4120. I'm pretty sure the timing of the update, and when the map scale started changing is about the same.

It just means I have to manually adjust the scale practically every time I start the car - like I said, a First World problem. This only happens at system startup, and the map scale doesn't change while driving. It isn't the variable map scale option (Autozoom) indicated by the "+" inside a small magnifying glass. I've got that off. The manual doesn't say that it should stay the same until altered, but it has for the last 2 years. Anyone got any clues as to why it has started doing this and/or what I can do to sort it I'd be glad to hear them. Thanks.

Have been meaning to ask the exact same thing for a while. Quite annoying really having to change the zoom every time you go into maps.

Another thing I find weird is when in navigation typing in an address I have to choose which country I am in !!! Their are only 2 choices, but doesn't it know I am in Australia??

    Thanks

i'm running on firmware 4120 with v6 maps - it always remembers where i left it (after ignition off), be it on 75m, 150m, 400m or Auto.

weird, but I just turn the right-knob to get it back to where I like it

Thanks for the input. Odd that it remembers the last scale in some cars, but not others with all running the same FW and map versions.

there's nothing of any significance that I've found in the Map, Nav, or Setup menus. Possibly a VCDS setting?

TBH I expect it to happen now so im prepared for zooming.

come to think of it, it only seems to happen when I enter a destination.

if I turn on the map without entering a destination, as in I just want to see whats around me, it appears to remember my last selection.

Enter a destination and save it and it will retain the country

Mine retains the scale except when on zoom and then it defaults to zoom out

Do a soft reset by pushing the top two l/h and far r/h buttons all at the same time Fixes lots of glitches

My first RNS was v5 maps and 39xx and never changed scale. It had a issue with the 26 pin plug so Was returned. my next unit was v5 4120 and it changes scale all the time from 200m to 5km I then got v6 maps and still the same. It has to be a firmware thing. My scale never goes down always up from what I left it at. I have noticed it only changes when it's been a while. If the unit goes through its start up it will change.

                      Try the reset then

Mine has always stuck to the previous setting as far as I can remember, through every possible firmware version 2760->5238...

I find the autozoom to be a bit too far out generally (eg jumping to 1km scale when on a 60km/h arterial road), so prefer to control the scale myself. I'll have to look into the adaptation channels tomorrow and see if there is anything that might look remotely like it would control this behaviour...

RNS 510/Columbus Map Scale On Startup

                          Hi all,

Firstly to all the people that have sent me PM's over the last few months, sorry! I've been working OS and not paying attention to the forums as the GTI was 15000kms away

Anyway, the reason for my post is I'm having the same zoom problem and it's really starting to bug me. I rarely use the navigation function as to be honest I think it's crap, my iPhone and google maps puts it to shame. But I often use it when I want to see if I can duck around red lights or a traffic holdup, it's great to see where the roads around you lead.

When I do this I'm typically looking for a street quickly, and it's terribly frustrating when it pops up zoomed out to 75km! I've tried the reset with no joy, and I'm running the latest maps and firmware having upgraded a few days ago when I got home.

Has anyone had any joy finding a fix as yet, nothing in the VAG that looks promising?

                            Not that I'm aware of.

Mine only started doing it after a FW upgrade to 4120, but as can be seen from the posts on this thread the fact the satnav suddenly changed behaviour in conjunction with FW upgrade doesn't prove conclusively that the change in behaviour is due to the FW upgrade. That said I'm not a great believer in pure coincidence, but there's nothing that sees me able to say with any certainty that the FW upgrade is the cause of scale changing as a couple of people are running the same FW and map version as I am without scale changes on start up. Something to do with that combination of FW/maps in relation to the head unit model it's applied to perhaps? In the words of Qausimodo, just a hunch.

EDIT: Meant to say in the last couple of posts that I've tried soft resets as suggested, but they didn't resolve the issue.

I promised I'd check through the adaptation channels for anything related to this....will do so later today and report back.
