I know I'm kind of talking to myself here now but I thought I'd consolidate the information that I find in case somebody else wants to research the installation of one of these sub boxes.

In this post, vwcabriolet1971 outlines his switch to a full size spare and the purchase of the foam trays to raise the height of the boot liner.

Which is again raising the height of the boot liner for a full sized spare. The pictures in this thread make it easy to visual the amount of space "lost".
To summarize, it looks like the box will be ok to utilise. Some people are happy to lose the 4" of boot space for a full sized spare. I'm happy to lose the space for a sub. And the Americans have had a smaller amount of boot space all along due to the inclusion of a full size spare from the factory.
