  • MK6 GTI Uberstealth Underfloor Sub Box

    Hi Guys,

I'm currently exchanging a few emails with Nik Brewer who produces the Uberstealth sub boxes that can be found on the following site -

    Uber Stealth Audio Home Page

I'm interested in purchasing an underfloor sub box with the accompanying amp rack for installation of a 10" sub to complement the focal splits I have replaced the front speakers with.

As can be seen in photos on the uberstealth website, the boxes replace foam sections that surround the spare tyre. Nik has raised a concern that I make sure that there is indeed foam under the floor of the hatch, as the MKV did not in Australia.

This is obviously quite easy to check however I'm currently in the NT for work and won't be home for a couple of weeks. Can anybody confirm that underneath the cover in the hatch of Australian delivered MK6 GTI's there are indeed foam segments that can be removed?

    Cheers,

    Jake

The R definitely does. I have one of Nik's 8 inch boxes sitting under my floor as of yesterday! It's a work of art.
Just need to arrange for the Pioneer TS-SW841D, JL Audio XD2002 and LC2i to be installed...

By the way, fork out the extra for full plywood. It weighs next to nothing.
    Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.
Current:- Amarok V6 Sportline; Mazda CX-9 Azami AWD

MK6 GTI Uberstealth Underfloor Sub Box

      Hi Paul,

Thanks for the response. Fingers crossed the GTI is the same! I'll have my girlfriend check it out for me and take a picture tomorrow as I'm keen to place an order ASAP.

Any reason why you went for an 8" over a 10"? I'd love to see some pictures once you have it all installed.

Last question, would you mind sharing how much you paid for shipping and who you arranged it through?

      Cheers

      Jake

Be interested to see what the 10" is worth shipped?

I've just checked in the boot of my Mk6 GTI (MY10, built March 2010), and it does not have the foam inserts under the floor - the wheel well surround is solid, and non-removable. Sorry for the bad news!

(The Golf R is likely different as it has a substantially higher boot floor than the GTI and other front-wheel-drive Golfs, due to the 4motion hardware.)

MK6 GTI Uberstealth Underfloor Sub Box

Damn that sucks! I wonder why the US cars are different and include the foam inserts?

              Hi Jake,

Hope your car has the foam...

The R has a different shaped floor to The GTI. My box sits on the pasenger side and is flush with the other side. For my purposes the 8 inch box was cheaper ($300 + $150 shipping which Nik arranged), allowed me to keep the tools where they are on the drivers side and still have room for the amp and LC2i on the drivers side too. Plus the 8 inch is all I need.

This is the thread to read before doing a sub install: UBER-STEALTH Under Floor Sub Install - VW GTI MKVI Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVI Forum / VW GTI Forum - Golfmk6.com

It's in a US GTI and uses a 10 inch. You cant fit a 10 inch on that side in the R. This is how to do a sub and amp in a Dynaudio Golf.

              Cheers
              Paul

PS I will post pics but it might be a few weeks

Looks like the foam inserts are readily available on ebay, through ECS Tuning and a number of other sites online. I've identified one side as Part #1K6858858C which would suit me fine given the sub box would accommodate the other half. I don't know if there are any structural differences between the US and Australian delivered models or whether the foam trays just mean you lose a few inches of hatch depth.

The following image shows an exploded view of how it all goes together -

For a sacrifice of 4.25" of boot depth (the height of the Uberstealth sub box) and perhaps a touch of custom foam, I think this is still a viable option to allow for a very discrete installation of a sub to the Australian delivered MK6 GTI.

I'd be surprised if there were structural differences. Perhaps the foam and other inserts raise the boot floor and make a flat level surface when a full-sized spare tyre is fitted (rather than a space saver)? Is that a full-sized spare in this photo? The bottom-right corner of the boot in that photo does appear lower, and you can see the edge of the foam insert.

I had wondered if the difference was a full-sized spare. In the photo that you attached the wheel itself retains the stickers that outline speed restrictions which I thought was exclusive to space saving spares?

There are speed restrictions whenever the spare doesn't exactly match the other wheels, and it's likely those stickers will always be present just in case. Maybe that spare is a 17" and the car is fitted with 18s. The photo from Uberstealth Audio does look like a normal tyre, whereas my spare looks like it has a smaller and rounder sidewall.

Fair point, I didn't know that. Given that other markets ie. the US appear to miss out on a few inches of hatch space to allow for a full sized spare, I'd be willing to lose the few inches gained with the space saver after the addition of an underfloor sub box.

Might have to do a few measurements and scour the US forums for further detail. All in all, I don't feel particularly off put by all of this so far.

Good idea. Just check that the carpet (and its backing board) that lines the boot floor won't have any issues curving and stretching over the foam inserts. Otherwise you might end up with a sloping boot, or have to do some cutting and trimming to make it fit.

Looks to me like you need Nik's sub box and matching amp rack and then a piece of foam to fit over the spare tire (or buy a full size tyre and wheel). Only issue then is the carpet. GTI one might fit or get a genuine R one or make your own from thin fibre board covered with carpet.

                              Hi Paul,

That's exactly what I was thinking. The sub box and matching amp rack negate the need for the foam blocks apart from a circular piece (probably custom) that covers the tools on top of the spare wheel to bring it all up to an even height. As for the carpet; Fingers crossed that it fits no problems. The alternative is for me to pick up a new OEM liner that appears to be suited to the foam blocks (Part #1K0061166H469) which is Item 1 on this schematic -
