  • It seems I have the good one.

For those running Mac OS and want to check the hash,

Open Terminal and use the md5 command to view the hash.

    md5 RNS510V6Maps.iso
    MD5 (RNS510V6Maps.iso) = 6e344e4e1ec7923a34d54e90cb330b7c

Those wanting a link to the correct version, check post #206, it should still be active.

Thanks to those who put the effort into finding the bad iso.

Im not sure it is bad as after wiping mine out with V5 and then reloading your ISO it doesnt look any different so far but will confirm in the morning.

In case it is I am uploading your version to my link as well Have removed the other one

      • Sorry if this is an RTFM problem, I'm still working my way through the hundreds of pages of manuals on our new Alltrack: where do I get the version number of the maps (and the firmware, while I'm at it, though I suspect that would be up to date on a vehicle built in late February)?

I've noticed that our home (rural Victoria) is not covered in the map, which is a bit of PITA when the navigation system tells you that you need to turn around to a proper road to come home - while you're standing in your driveway. Maybe, just maybe it's an outdated map and the newer one has our address.

Alternatively, is there some agency at VW that you can yell at to get our area added? We're on google maps, nearmap and what not just fine, after all! Or can you do your own customisation in these cases?

Hold the setup button in until screen changes to 3 lines with FM....... AM......... And Version information Press that and the info is there
If not its old firmware. My unit was about 8 months older than the car it had 2760 in it and was a C unit

There is a lot more than country Victoria not covered and yelling wont do any good and they are unable to be customised.

Hopefully you can find your way around your local area without a map LOL.

Lastly I would never use my home as a flagged address. The car gets stolen and they know where to go to clean the house out .
As the unit is deficient in being able to do a reversed trip there is not much point

          • ............or.

If you cannot bring up the 'secret menu' after holding the 'setup' button for (approx) 20 seconds...you need someone to access the 'brain' of the car via a VCDS cable. There is a thread (VAGCOM/VCDS help....or similar). Someone near you should be able to run a scan (takes 5 minutes) and then it will show you what version unit you have etc etc. Secret Menu can be enabled during this process.

Then come back and report the findings...we can then guide you to perform FW and map upgrades as required.

            • Well this morning I took the V5 disc and the V6 in the HDD and went for a drive.

I set the Nav on 50m and 3D mode With V5 I got streets up to one block back from the road I was on but only the main ones, not the little cul de sacs etc.
Some of the adjoining streets appeared as I approached them and were not present on the map after I passed them. Probably because the map is scrolling and as you pass they disappear a bit before dropping off the screen

Did the same trip with just the V6 on the hard drive with the same results EXCEPT at the turning point of the trip ONE EXTRA street appeared which was ahead and to the left.
Apart from that there was NO DIFFERENCE.

In 2 D mode the majority of the streets are named with a few minor ones not there.

The same applies on both maps.

So I dont know how some of you are finding that the V6 is worse.

Last night I reinstalled V5 and looked at it against MY V6 ISO version and the mapping seems to be the same. I then upgraded to Jorges V6 version and it is identical to my ISO version so dont know why it didnt load for some and the streets appear as I have had no trouble with any of them.
I find it strange that the data didnt load and if so how the unit accepted the fact that it was a faulty disc????

              • Yeah that is weird that you aren't seeing any difference between the 'good' and 'bad' ISO. I wonder if it has something to do with the location you are in? I'm in Melbourne, maybe the Melbourne part of the 'bad' ISO is corrupt but wherever you are(Brisbane?) isn't? I wonder if you can browse/zoom into Melbourne on yours and see what the 'bad' one looks like?

I did a binary compare of both ISO files and can see the 'bad' one has a bunch of null data in one part of the file where the 'good' one has actual data.

I extracted both ISO's and found the file that is different is the 'auz.fea' file.... I'm guessing 'fea' stands for features... but I don't know what I can open this file in... I work with some Geospacial guys so could probably ask them to take a look if no one else knows?

Not worried enough to get into that sort of stuff. Am happy with what I have as far as anyone can be happy with the crappy thing.
Will be interested though to see what your guys come up with. The ISO I posted was one which was posted earlier in the thread so lots more will have tried it I guess

                  • Yeah my guess is somewhere along the line when someone was reuploading it, part of the file never finished getting created for whatever reason. (it looks like about 1.7% of the file missing at the start of the ISO).

Anyway bottom line is, the V6 map should look the same as the V5 including the amount of street names shown, if anyone isn't seeing that then it probably means they need the 'good' ISO.

I am still getting that "turn left towards domnic" thing which I thought someone said was fixed in V6?

No not fixed Neither has the "Stay on this road for a very long time" or "Turn now" 25 m before you do Strange how $100 units can manage this and VW $3000 boat anchor cant. Probably the crap map data they buy

Also the fact that the map lags behind where you actually are leading to the above turn instruction being well away from where it should be

                        ka-ching. it's not VW...but the map originator

And, lag concerning turn instructions will have a lot to do with satellite reception.

This morning, my RNS lagged so much, it got itself totally lost. I did a soft reset, turned system off (ignition off, key out) and then finally after re-starting car and unit...some time up the road, the sats found went from 3/10 to 8/10

I have often had problems with the satellites 'disappearing' and causing the unit to go into headless chicken mode.

And, I can't (personally) see what the problem with "Stay on this road for a long time" announcement is. So what...it just lets you know that there will be no turns for a quite a while. Big deal.

The map lags because the chip in the unit is not giving precise enough data or someone has used the wrong datum which can give misplaced locations. I cant zoom in under 25m and thats about how far out the turn instructions are. Just far enough to be a PITA if streets are close together Headless chicken mode could be caused by different GPS aerial locations Lots have trouble with under dash units.
Mine has Sharks fin and hasnt done that YET
My Tomtom says "Stay on this road for xx km" so you have an idea when you are getting near your turn. It also gives the name of the street you are turning into which can be a big help in unfamiliar areas.
Have been caught with two streets really close and ended up a blind alley, when had it said the name I would have turned at the correct one
                          So why cant VW

                          • Because it's Sensis (& Continental), NOT VW.

What I meant was, If Tomtom, Garmin, Navman and even the cheapies like Navig8r can get proper text to speech instructions from map makers, why cant VW They also have more accurate positioning when moving, another drawback with these units.

                              • I understand...however, VW contract Continental to make the units. VW don't manufacturer the RNS.
Then the maps are derived from Sensis (for Australia anyway) to suit the Continental hardware/software.

The market for these units is limited to the particular manufacturers who pick them up as 'add-ons' and try to sell them as OEM items.

OTOH..Tomtom/Garmin et al manufacturer their own units, source the map data from within and have a much bigger audience to sell to. therefore...more income, so more money spent on development and new maps.

It's demand vs cost. And the Continental units and their inferior mapping files are not selling anywhere near the number of units as the small hand-held/windscreen jobbies.

It's our choice if we want a fully integrated with the benefits (already discussed before) compared to a unit which in some respects may outperform the "OEM" unit, but has security issues, leaves a mark on the windscreen, can impede driver vision (saw a beauty the other day...GPS was positioned right in the drivers line of sight...WTF???)

We have a top of the range Gamin in the Polo. It's ok....but nowhere near as versatile (IMHO) as the RNS. Each have their quirks and foibles.
