for the $1000 budget, u would have to source ur components yourself rather than buying at a local audio shop in oz.
i managed to put my system together for about $1000.
i went with boston acoustics pro60se fronts, im running a jl audio 5 channel amp. i also had a jl audio bass tube that i had for a few years that is relatively small and does the job, so that was nothing (but cost me about $250 or $300, i cant recall). install was about $200-300 i think.
i got my components from the usa, half the price locally. in fact i think the speakers and amp cost me about aud$600 delivered, no issues.
people go on about no warranty, etc. but ive had it for about 2 years, so warranty would be finished anyway.

how does it sound, i wont be winning soundoffs, but for the spend, its more than adequate

To keep the power going just connect the black plug into the socket on the other side.

Fir RCA cut off the brown plug and splice on the RCAs according to

      Multi-pin connector 1, 8-pin, for loudspeaker outputs

And then connect the speaker output to the connector on the other side or do your own speaker wiring.

      Thanks for the feedback.

I'll have a word to the boys at Northfield and see if they can help.

Just to clarify would I also need to adjust the audio settings via vagcom?

My-gti doesnt seem to have pin assignments for the RCD. Do you know if they are the same as the RNS?

To be honest, given I don't have a VCDS throwing an LC2i in sounds easier, al-be-it will likely result in a slightly inferior sound quality.

Last time I talked to northfield they gave me a glazed look, they usually only want to do things one way...

Anywho yes you must, or you'll be sending something like 12-14v down the line which is too high for any amps RCA input.

The pinouts on the main connector are the same for all current gen VW headunits, RCD310,510 and RNS510

You can put a line converter in but then you've gotta wire it in, connect all the cables, set it's gains just right and make sure theres no ground loops from it.

            Start off with this,
IFVW GOLF 6 KIT $559 | Focal Car Audio Australia

you can install these speakers with minimal time required, it even has a how-to video on youtube on installing them.

No funny cutting or wire adaption required either.

If you feel you need to upgrade more afterwards, introduce an amplifier to these same speakers and perhaps add a Sub?

the focal speakers r a great step forward from the standard system.
the focal underseat sub is also something to consider as well. my brother has one in his hilux. they do the job

Focal have their iBus 2.1 which is an 8" sub and 2 channel amp in the one enclosure. Has both line and speaker level inputs. A review I read rated it better than that Bus25 which is a 10" sub. Whether it fits under the seat of an R is another matter...

As long as you stay under the dimension of 200mm x 220mm x 60mm.
You will be able to fit one in. However these focal speakers are a great upgrade. So you may not need to upgrade with a sub etc?
