  • 2012 Golf R sound build - ideas/prices

    Hi guys,

I have done some searching around the forum and other sites as well but haven't come up with much in regards to sound builds (that include general price levels anyway) for the Golf R. I didn't get the nav + dynaudio package as I couldn't justify paying that much extra for a premium sound system (have my own GPS and wasn't impressed by the VW navigation.)

Has anyone upgraded the sound from stock that could give me an idea of what they had put into it around the $1000 mark including install (not very good with my hands unfortunately!) I am a bit of an audiophile so the stock system just isn't doing it for me, I mainly listen to house/electro.

Apologies if I have overlooked an obvious thread about this but I would really appreciate the help as I haven't upgraded audio in a car before.

    Cheers

    This is what I did

If you were to go without the sub and one amp, you would be within your budget and be a lot better than the stock setup. I stayed with the RNS510, not the most feature-packed GPS device (a pretty poor one in fact), but as a CD/MDI/etc player, it is good quality.

Thanks for that mate, I had seen your thread and it looks very good. How much was your build all up?

$3300 Splits are Dynaudio, not OE variety

The RNS510 has excellent sound quality imho, use VCDS and set it to sound system to get a juicy 6V Balanced differential RCA preout.

Pin 10 from Multi-pin connector 4, 12-pin, for CD changer control and CD audio input signals also works as a remote line.

At $1000 including install you'd probably be looking at just getting a 5CH amp to power the stock speakers better with a sub channel to add a sub to later though

I'm not sure how this would pan out as the Polo actually has much, much better stock speakers than the Golf.

I'll be looking to do a similar upgrade in the near future to my GTI, with the standard head unit. So far I have in mind:
            Audiocontrol LC2i Line Converter
            4 channel amp, like a Soundstream Ref4.400
            8" 4ohm sub like Brimway's install, bridged
            6" 2-way's, Infiniti, JL etc.
The rears' will continue to run off the HU.

I was into car audio in a big way many years ago when the likes of Soundstream, JL, MBQuart, Infiniti had some of the best gear. Is this still the case or have they all moved to being made in China? The prices these days seem really cheap....maybe it's just my perception of money that's changed over the last 10 years???

Haven't set a budget yet but I want it stealth and only have 1 amp under the seat.

No need for the line converter, RNS does high powered RCA fine

Edit: Ah, but that won't be good for your rears then...

Ow right. I was under the impression only the RNS only had Preouts. Just seen the Focal gear, that OEM replacement looks the business.

You splice RCA connectors on the end of the speaker lines after setting it to vw sound system.

Seeing cost is the main thing that steered you away from the DynAudio upgrade I'd probably jump onto the diymobileaudio forum and read over / post in the system design section - very useful information

Can someone confirm that RCA's can be spliced into the factory speaker wires?

I'm currently trying to find a suitable solution for my R. Looking at ditching the factory Dynaudio speakers and amp. If I could run RCA's straight from the RDC510 to my amps that'll save me $$$.

It's how I'm running my sound in the Polo right now - RNS510 feeds 6V RCA right into my 5ch amp, and then the output goes back into factory harness to the speakers. I got a VW SOT lead (they're meant for old BT systems but don't worry) so you don't have to permanently mess up your factory wiring.

To keep the power going just connect the black plug into the socket on the other side.

                              Multi-pin connector 1, 8-pin, for loudspeaker outputs

And then connect the speaker output to the connector on the other side or do your own speaker wiring.
